GIZMO-- Learning Objectives
● In normal conditions, water can exist in three different states.
● Compare solids, liquids, and gases in terms of having a fixed
shape or volume.
● Describe the phase changes that occur when heat is added to or
removed from water.
● Compare the structure, spacing, and motion of molecules in
solids, liquids, and gases.
Take some container out of your fridge….

After about 5 mins. Describe the outside of the

container.
Where did the water come from and why it is there?
Give other examples of this type of phase change.
Prior Knowledge…...
1. A pot filled with snow is left on a hot stove for a while. What would happen?

2. A phase is a state of matter, such as a solid, a liquid, or a gas. Which phases would
you see? Explain

3. A phase change is a change from one phase to another. What phase changes would
you see in this example?
Need to Know
● How are the freezing and melting temperatures of water related to
each other?
● How are the boiling and condensing temperatures of water related
to each other?
● Which phase has a fixed shape?
● Which phases take the shape of their containers?
● Why do solids have a fixed shape, while liquids and gases do not?
● Which phases have a set volume?
● Which phase can be compressed/expanded?
● How do molecules move in a solid, liquid, or gas?
