Introduction
A loved one’s death hits every person differently. Each one of us
has somehow found our way and takes unique forms the world
over as cultures celebrate the life and honor the death of
individuals in ways often singular to their culture. Death has
increasingly become an uncomfortable topic in our society; it’s
something that we avoid whenever possible. As people make
considered choices about their own lives and deaths, cremation
has become an increasingly popular option in now a day,
representing a recent but accelerating change in funerary
practices.

Columbarium in Bago City through the use of the standards of
practical advancement by planning foundation and improvement
viable with the culture and human expressions which is imagined
to make Bago City.

14
Theoretical Framework

For a successful architectural design, the theoretical

framework will be the guide and establishment of the
investigation. To be more explicit, it will incorporate
hypotheses, ideas, methods of reasoning and the
preferences that will be applied in the real development
and empower the researcher to be intensive and ideal
(Labaree, 2012).

15
Theoretical Framework

The following theories and concepts shall be considered

as a basis in the achievement of the desired outcome of
the study.

16
Theoretical Framework

A. As to Site
- Achieve deliberateness, solidarity and excellence
- Accessible to PWD’s (Accessibility Law R.A 7277)
- Street layout, pathways, parking ares, plots, support facilities,
signages and other features signed and sealed by a licensed
environmental planner
- Design standards and guidelines for Memorial Park/Cemeteries,
Cemeteries or Memorial Parks

17
Theoretical Framework

B. As to Building Engineering/Utility
- Plumbing
- Electrical Works

18
Theoretical Framework

C. As to Building Function
- Accessibility and traffic flow
- Circulation system
- Major and minor roads
- Dead end streets
- Paving of roads and pathways

19
Theoretical Framework

D. As to Building Aesthetics
- Contemporary Architecture
- Use of new material in both the interior and exterior
- Animated Architecture

20
Theoretical Framework

E. As to Building strength/Durability
- Structural framework for niches/vaults
- Construction requirements (National Building Code of the
Philippines)
- Water Proofing

Significance of the Study
• To the People of Bago City
– As the main area of the research, this study shall assist their
needs to their love ones who passed away to have a good and
comfortable place to rest in peace.

• To the Researcher
– This study is advantageous and useful to the researcher in applying
ideas, theories and knowledge to planning a columbarium complex. The
researcher is expected to conduct a survey to the inhabitants of Bago
City and may ask for consultations to the professionals related to the
study to come up with a better idea.

• To the Future Researcher

– This study will benefit the future researcher especially student
researchers that are planning to design a columbarium complex. And it
will help who are having identical or related studies which they can
refer to as a guideline, or make use of the information as indicated here
in.

24
Scope and Limitation of the Study
• This study aims to create an architectural design of “A Proposed 3
Storey - Columbarium Complex”, it will primarily focus on Bago
residents only but will take in consideration for neighboring cities in
the design process.

• The proposal includes the site analysis, site development, aesthetics,

and design character of the project. On the other hand, due to the
complexity of the project, the researcher is limited to the following:
– The management and operations are not included in the study
but will be considered in the design process.
– The architectural design of the study. The sizes of the areas
required will be based on the space program provided by the
researcher.
– The project is only limited to the architectural solutions
presented. Engineering systems and calculations will not be
included. Operation and management of staff, professionals and
volunteers are not included in the scope.
– Site selection is not part of this study because the site is already
given.
– Feasibility is not part of this proposal. But the proponent will
prepare a project based on current generally accepted cost
parameters.
25
Methodology

1. Research Design - For this study, the Descriptive Explanatory

Research Design will be used since it is the most suitable method.
- Observations
- Site Visitation and Inspection
- Documentation and Recording of Data
- Events and other related information through photos in achieving
the solution on:
-Site Selection
-Site Planning and Development
- Research (Library, Books, Journals, Internet and relevant studies
related to the topic)

26
2. Data Gathering Procedure
- The researcher conducts observation by means of digital
camera for pictures and videos. Determining the location and
condition of the site, topographical features, solar orientation
and wind directions, what the mode of transportation are,
existing utilities in the vicinity, soil type and presence of
natural features. Also, the researcher will visit other
columbarium that are existing, gathering information that
could help the proposed project.

27
3. Population and Sampling Technique
- According to (Taherdoost 2016), defines sampling is
doubtful that researcher should be able to collect data from
all cases. Thus, there is a need to select a sample. The entire
set of cases from which researcher sample is drawn in
called the population. Since, researchers neither have time
nor the resources to analyze the entire population so they
apply sampling technique to reduce the number of cases.

28
4. Research Instruments
- Survey Questionnaire (Criteria by Carter V. Good and
Douglas Scates)
- Ocular Inspection of the Site
- Library and Computer Techniques
- Informal Interview

29
5. Validity of the Research instruments
- Validity and reliability quantify necessary information
in the study. Validity indicates that the assessment of research
instruments are suited to what it intends to measure. It is
needed so that the results will be accurately interpreted.

30
The mean rating of the jury was computed and interpreted to
reflect the validity of the instruments.

31
6. Data Collection Technique
Systematic gathering procedure will be used for the research study which
involves survey questionnaire, library research and interviews. Using in
different process according to its purpose to the study.

The survey will be conducted by the researcher to the residents of the City of
Bago through social media and face to face explaining the background of the
study.

32
7. Statistical Treatment Data
Architectural design thesis is a potential venue where statistics is
applicable. The following were the types of statistics used in
research.

33
Descriptive Statistics

1. Slovin’s Formula - This formula is used to calculate an

appropriate sample size from a population.

Where:

𝒏 is the sample size

𝑵 is the population size

𝒆 is the desired margin of error, 0.05%

34
Descriptive Statistics

2. Frequency Distribution or Percentage Formula - It

can show either the actual number of observations falling in each range or the
percentage of observations. In the latter instance, the distribution is called a
relative frequency distribution.

Where:

𝑷 is the percentage

𝒇 is the frequency

𝒏 is the number of respondents

35
Descriptive Statistics

3. Graphs - Provides information of percentage of certain data

based on the answers of the respondents.

36
Descriptive Statistics

4. Ranking - Is used when a researcher is interested in establishing some

type of priority among a set of objects, whether they be policies, attributes,
organizations, individuals, or some other topic or property of interest

Where:

𝚺 is the summation of scores

𝑿 is the mean

𝑵 is the number of respondents
