Communication

The term communication comes from the Latin word

‘communicare’, which means to share, impart, participate,
exchange, transmit or to make common.

Any communication involves a transaction: a person wants

to talk to someone about something because that person
need something from that someone.
Nature of Communication

Communication occurs between

01 two or more people.
Communication is basically an exchange of ideas or
information, it is two-way – there is a source of the
message and a destination. This can be in a form of a
face-to-face interaction, a phone conversation, a group
discussion, and even a letter correspondence.
Nature of Communication
Communication can be expressed through
02 written or spoken words, and actions.

a. Communication takes place with the

combination of verbal and nonverbal elements
as one kind complements the other.
Nature of Communication

03 Communication as a Process

source/speaker sends and encodes a
message through a channel to a
destination/receiver.
Elements of Communication

01 SPEAKER
Elements of Communication

01 Speaker/Sender
a. Chooses his/her purpose, crafts the message and
decides how to deliver topic using the process
called ENCODING.

*Encoding – the creation of message. Where the

speaker converts his/her ideas into words.

b. Everyone can be speaker from time to time.

a. What needs to be delivered or imparted to
somebody else.
b. This is the central to the process because the
point of communication is to say “something”.
c. The message to be sent is based on “why”,
“what”, and “how” the speaker wants to say it.

05 RESPONSE
Elements of Communication
05 Response
a. Response is the reaction of the receiver after
being exposed to the message using the process
called DECODING.
*Decoding - is the process by which the receiver
assigns meaning to the symbols encoded by the
sender.
b. The response may be immediate or deferred,
favorable or unfavorable.
Elements of Communication
Continuation of Response……

Once the message is sent to the destination or the receiver, the receiver
then performs the process called DECODING where he or she
interprets the message based on the CONTEXT.

*Context - includes the people, the place, the situation and even the
common experiences of the people involved in the communication
process.

07 Noise
a. Any barrier to communication.

1. Physical Noise - These are common sounds that distract the

communication situation.
2. Physiological Noise - stems from the body and may tend to
distract the people involved to properly perform the
encoding and the decoding processes in communication
since they are not feeling well.
3. Psychological Noise - can come in the form of worries,
problems, and anxieties.
Elements of Communication

Continuation of noise….

4. Semantic Noise - comes from the language used

in the communication process.
Communication

This process is dynamic or always changing as it occurs

within a context which constantly varies depending on so
many factors like the people involved, the place, the
channels used and the situation. Communication also
occurs always with noise which affects the entire process in
one way or another.
