Horizontal vs Vertical Motion
• The horizontal and vertical components of two-dimensional motion are
independent of each other. Any motion
in the horizontal direction does not
affect motion in the vertical direction,
and vice versa.
• This seems counter-intuitive to most
people.
What are Intuitions?
• Intuition is basically what we call a “gut
feeling” in every day life.
• Intuition is something that a person knows by
instinct rather than conscious reasoning.
• Some people deny as intuition being an actual
form of knowledge and action while other
view it as a of other ways of knowing such as
past experiences, better sense perception, and
an active imagination.
Intuition in Scientists
• In most cases, intuition helps scientists in many ways.
• They are capable of taking quick and smart actions seeing
as they remember past experiences as well as information
they have studied or acquired over time.
• These actions occur quickly and don’t require lots of
thought especially in experienced scientists.
• An example of that is when scientists spot patterns in their data. They sometimes do
not spot it through studying their results thoroughly but just by unconsciously
remembering
something.
Measuring Intuition
• Intuition in science has become a very important factor nowadays, that
scientists have come up with a way to measure it.
• A group of students were all shown a picture with dots moving around on
the right side of the screen. On the left side there were pictures being
flashed at them slow enough to be only subconsciously perceived.
• When positive images were flashed, the subjects were more accurate,
quicker, and more confident in their answers. But when the negative
images were shown, it was quite the opposite.
Measuring Intuition contd.
• This experiment showed scientists
how people naturally use unconscious
information from the brain to help
them in whatever they are doing.
• This is known as intuition.
