Design of Rectangular

Footings
MODULE 5
Additional Step for Rectangular
Footings

Determine how many reinforcing bars along the short

direction (transverse reinforcement) should be in the
center band / band width of the footing. You may have to
add one bar in case the number of bars outside band
width are not balanced.

415.5.4.2 For reinforcement in short direction, a portion of the total

reinforcement YsAs given by the equation below shall be distributed
uniformly over a band width (centered on center line of column or pedestal)
equal to the length of short side of the footing. Remainder of reinforcement
required in short direction, (1-Ys)(As) shall be distributed uniformly outside
center band width of footing.

Where β is ratio of long to short sides of footing.
