INDUCATION MOTOR

Induction Motor is an
Alternating Current
asynchronous motor
CLASSIFICATION OF INDUCATION
MOTOR

SINGEL PHASE

THREE PHASE
THREE PHASE INDUCATION MOTOR

THREE PHASE INDUCATION MOTOR

IS THE MOST POPULAR TYPE OF A.C.
MOTOR .IT IS VERY COMMONLY USED
FOR INDUSTRIEAL DRIVE SINCE IT IS
CHEAP, ROBUST, EFFICIENT
&RELIABLE
PARTS OF THREE PHASE INDUCATION
MOTOR
STATOR

IT IS THE STATIONARY PART OF THE MOTOR.

IT HAS THREE MAIN PARTS
 OUTER FRAME
STATOR CORE
STARTER WINDING
ROTOR
IT IS THE ROTATING PART OF THE MOTOR.
IT HAS MAINELY TWO TYPES:-
SQUIRREL CAGE
SLIP RINGS
SQUIRREL CAUGE
SLIP RINGS ROTOR
PRINCIPAL OF THREE PHASE INDUCATION
MOTOR

WHEN THREE PHASE INPUT SUPPLY GIVEN TO

THREE PHASE STARTOR WINDING OF THREE
PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR . THEN ROTATING
MAGNETIC FIELD INDUCED ON AN E.M.F. IN
ROTOR CONDUCTOR IN WHICH CASES IN
CURRENT FLOW IN A SHORTED ROTOR
CONDUCTOR THIS CURRENT INTERACTS WITH
THE ROTATING MAGNETIC FIELD & PRODUCED
A TORQUE WHITCH ROTATE THE ROTOR.
Rotating Magnetic Field
• Balanced three phase
windings, i.e. mechanically
displaced 120 degrees form
each other, fed by balanced
three phase source
• A rotating magnetic field with
constant magnitude is
produced, rotating with a
speed

Rotating Magnetic Field
Rotating Magnetic Field
Principle of operation
• This rotating magnetic field cuts the rotor windings and
produces an induced voltage in the rotor windings
• Due to the fact that the rotor windings are short circuited, for
both squirrel cage and wound-rotor, and induced current
flows in the rotor windings
• The rotor current produces another magnetic field
• A torque is produced as a result of the interaction of those
two magnetic fields

 ind  kBR  Bs
Where ind is the induced torque and BR and BS are the magnetic
flux densities of the rotor and the stator respectively
THE SLIP

INDUCATION MOTOR ROTOR ALWAYS

ROTATES AT A SPEED LESS THEN
SYNCHRONOUS SPEED. DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN FLUX SPEED (NS) & THE
ROTOR SPEED (N) IS CALLED SLIP.

ADVANTAGES
• IT HAS VERY SIMPLE AND EXTREMLY,
RUGGED, ALMOST UNBREAKABLE
CONSTRUCATION.
• ITS COST IS LOW & IT IS VERY RELIABLE.
• IT HAS EFFICIENCEY IN NORMAL RUNNING
CONDITIONS.
• NO BRUSHES NEEDED.
DISADVANTAGE
• ITS SPEED CAN NOT BE VARID WITHOUT.
• SACRIFICING SAME OF ITS EFFICIEANCY.
• JUST LIKE A DC SHUNT MOTOR ITS SPEED IS
DECREASES WITH INCREASE IN LOAD.
• ITS STARTING TORQUE IS SAME WHAT
INTERIOR TO THAT OF A DC SHUNT MOTOR.
