About Facebook
Facebook, American company offering online social networking services. Facebook was
founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris
Hughes, all of whom were students at Harvard University. Facebook became the
largest social network in the world, with more than one billion users as of 2012, and
about half that number were using Facebook every day. Access to Facebook is free of
charge, and the company earns most of its money from advertisements on the Web site.
New users can create profiles, upload photos, join a preexisting group, and start new
groups. The site has many components, including Timeline, a space on each user’s profile
page where users can post their content and friends can post messages; Status, which
enables users to alert friends to their current location or situation; and News Feed, which
informs users of changes to their friends’ profiles and status. Users can chat with each
other and send each other private messages. Users can signal their approval of content
on Facebook with the Like button, a feature that also appears on many other Web sites.

The original concept for Facebook involved a way to bring the social experience of
college to the Internet. Mark Zuckerberg wanted to create an environment that could

Why did Mark

help college students connect with one another. Harvard organizations such as
fraternities and sororities already had a precursor to Facebook for each individual
organization. His idea was to take this information and put it into a central location
Zuckerberg so that all of the students of a college could communicate with one another.

Invent Another reason that Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook was so that users could
share information with each other. Users had the freedom to share as much or as
Facebook? little as they want about themselves. He wanted to create an environment in which
you could send messages, share pictures, look at other people's pictures, share
videos and links and have ongoing conversations with each other. This way, people
can stay connected with each other regardless of their physical locations.
When creating Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg also wanted to create a way for users to
maintain their privacy.
Beyond the social interaction and privacy controls, Mark Zuckerberg also created
Facebook because he believed it could be a viable business. He got some start-up
capital from his friend Eduardo Saverin because he expected to be able to make
money with his idea at some point in the future. At the time, he did not anticipate
how massively successful Facebook would be, but it emerged as one of the biggest
companies in the world today.

What is so unique about Facebook and
what made it so successful ?
What makes Facebook unique is the ability to connect and share with the people you care about at the same
time. For many, having a Facebook account is now an expected part of being online, much like having your
own email address. And because Facebook is so popular, other websites have worked to integrate Facebook.
Facebook was launched in 2004 and the people weren’t exposed to this kind of technology at that time. One
can contact their relatives who are staying abroad easily through Facebook at absolutely no cost.

It made it easier for Facebook users to take their online identity with them across the web, according to
Zuckerberg. It also enabled them to share what they do online with their friends and stay updated on what
friends doing, without having to create separate accounts for every website or app.
How he got the idea
At the time, Zuckerberg says he was simply solving a problem he saw
around him.

“Yeah, well, I never started this to build a company,” says Zuckerberg,

speaking to Freakonomics Radio as part of its six-week series called “The
Secret Life of CEOs,” which launched Thursday.

″Ten years ago, you know, I was just trying to help connect people at
colleges and a few schools.

“That was a basic need, where I looked around at the internet and there
were services for a lot of things that you wanted,” says Zuckerberg,
according to a transcript.

“You could find music; you could find news; you could find information,
but you couldn’t find and connect with the people that you cared about,
which as people is actually the most important thing.

Online “face books” already existed at Harvard at the time. These were
online directories that featured photos of students alongside some
information about them. There wasn’t a single “face book” for the whole
student body of Harvard university, which is why Zuckerberg came up
with the idea to create one.On February 4 2004, the first iteration of
Facebook was born, then known as thefacebook.com and made available
exclusively to Harvard students.
