ADVERB CLAUSE ( IF CLAUSE)

• If you study in France, you’ll have the option to travel through


various parts of Europe including London, Barcelona, and
Rome.
ADVERB CLAUSE ( TIME CLAUSE)

• When you study abroad you will find incredible new foods,
customs, traditions, and social atmospheres.

ADVERBS

An adverb is a part of speech that describes an adjective, another adverb or a verb.


Adverbs give more information about how an action was performed.
• She walked slowly. (adverb)
• She walked like an old lady. (adverb phrase)
• She walked as if she were heading to the gallows. (adverb clause)
PHRASE VS. CLAUSE

Examples
• She walked like an old lady. (adverb phrase)
• She walked as if she were heading to the gallows. (adverb clause)
• PHRASE: "like an old lady" does not contain a subject and a verb
• CLAUSE: "as if she were heading to the gallows" contains a subject (she) and a verb (were heading)
INDEPENDENT CLAUSES VS DEPENDENT
CLAUSES
• Independent clauses are complete sentences.
• Dependent clauses, also known as subordinate clauses, cannot stand alone as a complete
sentence. (Adverb clauses are one type of dependent clauses).
COMMA REQUIREMENTS BY CLAUSE
PLACEMENT
• beginning placement (comma required) - Whether you like it or not, you have to go.
• middle placement (commas required) - The boy, although he is very bright, failed math.
• end placement (no comma) - She enjoyed the party more than he did.

PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE

• By enrolling in a study abroad program, you’ll have the chance


to see a side of your major that you may not have been exposed

ADJECTIVE CLAUSE

• Many students who choose to study abroad are leaving their


home for the first time.
CLEFT SENTENCE

• In a cleft sentence, a single message is divided (cleft) into two


clauses. This allows us to focus on the new information.
• It’s not just adults who want to increase financial education - a
recent Sallie Mae poll found that 84 percent of high school
students want to learn more about personal finance.
DUMMY SUBJECT

• It is so important that children start learning about finances at a young age


so they are better prepared to make sound financial decisions in the future.
• It’s up to parents to begin the financial education process at a young age –
the sooner, the better.
IMPERATIVE FORM

• Use your school’s classifieds or other online forums to reach out


to other students and post your availability and expertise.
GERUND/TO-INFINITIVE

COMPOUND SENTENCE
