ADENOVIRUS
● Adenoviridae is a group of medium sized, non - enveloped , double stranded DNA viruses
that replicate and produce disease in the eye, respiratory , gastrointestinal and urinary tracts

● It has at least 47 serotypes associated with human diseases

● They infect humans and animals
Are medium sized (90-100 nm)

Unusually stable to chemical and physical agents and to adverse pH

conditions, Thus allowing for prolonged survival outside of the body

Adenoviruses were first isolated in human adenoids ( tonsils), from

which the name is derived.

Adenoviruses represent the largest non-enveloped viruses

They are the maximum size able to be transported through the

endosomes
CLASSIFICATIO

CLASSIFICATIO
N
Family Adenoviridae : 2 genera

- Aviadenovirus : adenoviruses of birds

- Mastadenovirus : infect mammals;

47 serotypes of human origins

6 subgroups ( A- F ) based on genome homology

Subgroup A : serotypes 12,18 and 31 : highly

oncogenic
MORPHOLOGY
Each penton unit consists of penton base
anchored in the capsid and projection of
fibre consists of a rod-like portion with a
knob attached at the distal end

The virus appears like a space vehicle

The capsid contains 252 capsomers

arranged as icosahedron With 20 triangular
facets and 12 vertices

240 are called as hexons

12 are called as pentons
MODE OF TRANSMISSION
● The infection mainly spreads through droplets (e.g. by coughing or sneezing)

● direct contact with oro-nasal secretions of patients (e.g. by shaking hands or

contact with contaminated surfaces)

● ingestion of contaminated food or water; and may cause outbreaks of acute

respiratory or eye infections in institutional settings such as schools and
hospitals
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
● pink eye
(conjunctivitis)
● common cold or flu-like ● acute gastroenteritis
symptoms
● fever ● bladder inflammation
● sore throat or infection
● acute bronchitis
● pneumonia ● neurologic disease
(conditions that affect
the brain and spinal
cord)
PREVENTION
2. Maintain good environmental hygiene
1. Maintain good personal hygiene
● Regularly clean and disinfect
● Perform hand hygiene frequently, frequently touched surfaces such as
especially before touching the furniture, toys and commonly
mouth, nose or eyes, after touching shared items
public installations such as handrails ● Maintain good indoor ventilation.
or door knobs ● Avoid going to crowded or poorly
● Cover your mouth and nose with ventilated public places; high-risk
tissue paper when sneezing or individuals may consider putting on
coughing. surgical masks while in such places.
● Avoid sharing eye medicines, eye
make-ups and other items that may
come into contact with the eyes.
