TECHNICAL TRAINING
PRESENTATION ON ELECTRIC
LOCOMOTIVE SHED AT
CENTRAL RAILWAYS, NAGPUR
INTRODUCTION
• The ISO-9001-2008 certified Central Railways
Electric Loco Shed situated in Nagpur.

• It is one of the three locomotive shed in Central

Railways that maintains the WAP-7 , WAG 7 ,
WAG-9 & WAM-4 locomotives

• The main objective of this loco shed is to inspect

and maintain the locos that operate throughout
the year.
WHAT IS ELECTRIC
LOCOMOTIVE ?
An Electric Locomotive is a
locomotive powered by
electricity from overhead
lines or on -board energy
storage such as battery or
fuel cell .
TYPES OF LOCOMOTIVE
There are two types of Locomotive

DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE AC LOCOMOTIVE

WDP WDG WDM WDS WAP WAG WAM WAS

WDP Wide Diesel Passenger G Goods

M Mixed
WAP Wide AC Passenger S Shunting

Wide – 1675mm or 5f.6inch

LET’S SEE VARIOUS SECTION
PRESENT IN THE LOCO SHED

The sections are as

follow ……

1.E-3 Sections

2.E-4 Sections

3.E-5 Sections
E-3 SECTION
• This section is responsible
for the inspection and the
overhauling of the traction
motors that drives the
locomotives.
• A 6 pole DC series wound
motor with commutating
poles.
• Locomotive have 6 axis.
Each axis carries single
traction Motor.
• Mounted on Bogie frame .
E-4 SECTION
This section is in
charge of relays,
speedometers,
microprocessors,
battery chargers
etc……
SPEEDOMETER
• Speedometer is a mandatory
safety equipment.
• The equipment indicates the loco
speed, records speed .
• Gives statistics of the speed of the
locomotive.
• Inside SPM, data is recorded in a
compact FLASH MEMORY
CARD.
• This compact memory card can
store long term data of the last 60
days of halt and run.
RELAY
Relays Provided in Locomotive :-
1.Safety Relay – Used for the safety
of the entire system.

2. Protection/Sequence Relay – Used

for the protection of a particular
device of the system.
Relay used in Loco
3. Time Lag Relay – Used to delay
the tripping of the locomotive under
certain circumstances.

4. Signalling Relay – Used to

indicate the proper functioning of
particular devices in the locomotive. Relay Test Unit in Loco shed

E-5 SECTION
This section
inspects and
maintains the
Transformer,
and SMGR
FURTHER IN E-5 SECTION WE EVEN SAW
MANY AUXILLARY MOTORS. LET US
LEARN ABOUT IT ONE BY ONE:--

• MVSI - Motor for silicon MVSI rectifier cooling

• MVSL - Motor for silicon MVSL rectifier

• MVRH - Motor for cooling transformer oil

• MVMT – Motor used for cooling the Traction

Motor
FURTHER WE MOVED AHEAD TO THE
DRIVER’S CABIN WHERE WE EXPLORED
THE FOLLOWING…
ALTHOUGH WE ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE
ALL PARTS OF AN ELECTRIC LOCO
BUT
ONE QUESTION STILL REMAINS…..

HOW DOES AN
ELECTRIC LOCO WORK ?
Overhead Through the roof bars
Transmission Line Transformer
(25kv) via pantograph
AC supply is fed
to the transformer
which in turn
steps down the
voltage and feds it
to
Smoothing Rectifier changes
Rectifier
Reactor AC to DC and is fed to SR

pulsating DC to smooth DC
Traction
(DC-DC) and feds it to Motor

CONCLUSION
In this way I have learnt a lot of things at electric loco
shed Ajni and in Rallison Electrical during my
summer training which would be very much useful
in my future. In loco shed I have learnt the
advantages of electric locomotives such that they can
save fossil fuels which are limited in amount and the
pollution induced due to them also reduced by using
neat and clean resource electricity as the power
source for locomotives
