Prayer
Dear Lord and Father of all,
Thank you for today.
Thank you for ways in which you provide for us all. For Your protection and
love we thank you.
Help us to focus our hearts and minds now on what we are about to learn.
Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as we listen and write.
Guide us by your eternal light as we discover more about the world around
us.
We ask all this in the name of Jesus.
Amen.
Random Variables and

Learning Competencies
Objectives

• Illustrates a random variable (discrete and

continuous) M11/12SP-IIIa-1
• distinguishes between a discrete and a
continuous random variable M11/12SP-IIIa-2
REMEMBER

Experiment is any activity which can be done

repeatedly under similar conditions.

Sample Space is the set of all possible outcomes

of an experiment
EXAMPLE

EXPERIMENT SAMPLE SPACE

1. Tossing a coin
2. Rolling a die or dice

3. Getting a defective item

VOCABULARY

Variable is a characteristic or
attribute that can assume different
values. We use capital letters to
denote or represent a variable.
VOCABULARY
A random variable is a function
that associates a real number to
each element in the sample space.
It is a variable whose values are
determined by chance.
EXAMPLE
Drawing balls from an urn
Two balls are drawn in succession without
replacement from an urn containing 5 red balls and 6
blue balls. Let Z be the random variable representing
the number of blue balls. Find the values of the
random variable Z. Complete the table.
STEPS SOLUTION
1. Determine the sample space. Let B represent The sample space for this experiment is
the blue ball and R represent the red ball. S=(RR,RB,BR,BB)

2. Count the number of blue balls in each outcome

in the sample space and assign this number to this
outcome.

POSSIBLE OUTCOME VALUE OF THE RANDOM VARIABLE Z

(number of blue balls)

RR 0
RB 1
BR 1
BB 2

So the possible values of the random variable Z are 0,1,and 2.

Tossing three coins
Suppose three coins are tossed. Let Y be the random variable
representing the number of tails that occur. Find the values of the
random variable Y. Complete the table below.

POSSIBLE OUTCOMES VALUE OF THE RANDOM

VARIABLE Y
(number of tails)

STEPS SOLUTION
1. Determine the sample space. Let H represent head and The sample space for this experiment is
T represent tail. S=(TTT,TTH,THT,HTT,HHT,HTH,THH,HHH)

2. Count the number of tails in each outcome in the

sample space and assign this number to this outcome.

POSSIBLE OUTCOME VALUE OF THE RANDOM VARIABLE Y

(number of tails)

TTT 3
TTH 2
THT 2
HTT 2
HHT 1
HTH 1
THH 1
HHH 0
So the possible values of the random variable Y are 0,1,2 and 3.
TYPES OF RANDOM VARIABLE

Types of Random Variables

Discrete Continuous

A Discrete variable A Continuous variable

Is a numerical value associated with Has infinite numerical values
the desired outcomes. It is also either associated with any interval
a finite or infinite number of values on the number line system
but countable such as whole numbers without any gaps or breaks.
0,1,2,3.
EXAMPLE OF A DISCRETE RAMDOM
VARIABLE

1. The number of COVID patients in a hospital per

day.
2. The number of students graduated every year.
EXAMPLE OF CONTINUOUS RAMDOM
VARIABLE

1. The height of the students in grade 11.

2. The weight of the newborn baby.
3. The average electricity consumption per month.

General Instruction
1. Follow the Step by step procedure
2. Supply what is asked on the table
3. Choose only 1 activity with 5 minutes duration

Activity 1- Tossing a 4 coins

Let X be the random variable for number of Heads
Activity 2- Rolling 2 dice
Let Y be the random variable representing the sum of the numbers
that appear
Activity 1

Flipping 4 coin/s
* Use H for Head and T for Tail
Activity 2

Casting/ Rolling 2 dice

* Get the sum of the numbers that appear
