What does resistance depend upon?

It depends upon the length of a conductor

Example with corridor

What does resistance depend upon?
It depends upon the cross sectional area of a conductor

Example with corridor / pipe with water

Resistivity

Resistivity is a constant that depends on the type of material of resistor

What does resistance depend upon?

The resistance of a conductor depends upon three factors:

1) Length
2) Cross–sectional area (thickness)
3) Type of material.
Example
A copper wire has a cross section area of 10 mm2 and length of 200 m. What is the
resistance of the wire?
What does resistance depend upon?

As the temperature of a wire increases, its resistance increases. Atoms in a hot

wire vibrate rapidly. There is little free space for the electrons to move through
the wire. Therefore hotter wires offer higher resistance.
Superconductors

At some critical temperatures that are usually very low conductor becomes super
conductor (R ≈ 0 Ω). For Mercury it is -270 C.

HW ( for practice)
1. USB charging cable (1 m long) uses 5 Volts and 2 Amperes.
a) How many ohms is the USB charging cable?
b) Copper is used to make cables. What is the area of the cable? Is it thin or thick?

2. You make USB cables from iron. Cables have the same area and resistance as
copper cables. What is the length of iron cable? Is it shorter or longer than
copper cables? Why?
3. Generally, conductors in electrical devices are made up of copper or aluminum.
Why do people prefer these metals?
