ENERGY CONSUMPTION IN RESIDENTIAL
BUILDINGS
• Buildings have a significant impact on energy use and the environment.
Commercial and residential buildings use almost 40% of the primary
energy and approximately 70% of the electricity in the United States.
BUILDING POWER DISTRIBUTION
• This section contains the architectural, structural, and mechanical provisions for building electrical systems.
DESIGN
CRITERIA

• Provide separate service entrance electrical rooms for each of the normal and emergency systems in the basement, preferably
Architectural adjacent to the utility tunnel and on an exterior wall. Equipment access shafts to the outside and walk-in access from the tunnel
Provisions system shall be provided wherever possible. The design shall take into consideration the possibility of flooding when below grade.

• Coordinate fire protection requirements in electrical rooms and vaults with the Architect and the Mechanical Engineer. The system
shall satisfy the code while minimizing the risk of electrocution. Sprinklers in high-voltage electrical vaults create extremely
Mechanical
Provisions hazardous conditions when they discharge, creating an electrocution hazard for workers.

• All transformers and equipment, seismically designed with structural connections to the floor slab, and channel or angle iron

SOURCES FOR POWER GENERATION
WHAT IS POWER GENERATION?

Annual Electricity Net Generated In the world

SOURCES FOR POWER GENERATION

Hydropower Nuclear power Coal Natural Gas

Biomass Wind Oil Solar

Tidal power Geothermal Cogeneration

HYDROPOWER PLANT
Hydroelectric power generation is an established
technology that uses the potential energy of water to
generate electricity. The main components of the
hydropower plants are shown in Fig. and comprise a
dam or retaining wall, a water turbine, and an
electrical generator.

NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

Nuclear power plants heat water to produce steam.
The steam is used to spin large turbines that generate
electricity. Nuclear power plants use heat produced
during nuclear fission to heat water. In nuclear
fission, atoms are split apart to form smaller atoms,
releasing energy.
COAL POWER PLANT

Coal-fired plants produce electricity by burning coal in a

boiler to produce steam. The steam produced, under
tremendous pressure, flows into a turbine, which spins a
generator to create electricity. The steam is then cooled,
condensed back into water and returned to the boiler to
start the process over.

NATURAL GAS
Natural gas is burned to produce
pressurised gas which spins the blades of a
turbine connected to a generator. Inside the
generator, magnets spin, causing the
electrons in wires to move, creating an
electrical current, generating electricity.
BIOMASS USE TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY

Most electricity generated from biomass is produced

by direct combustion. Biomass is burned in a boiler to
produce high-pressure steam. This steam flows over a
series of turbine blades, causing them to rotate. The
rotation of the turbine drives a generator, producing
electricity.
WIND ENERGY
Wind turbines convert the energy in wind to
electricity by rotating propeller-like blades around
a rotor. The rotor turns the drive shaft, which
turns an electric generator. Three key factors
affect the amount of energy a turbine can harness
from the wind: wind speed, air density, and swept
area.
OIL ENERGY
Combustion turbine - Oil is burned under pressure to
produce hot exhaust gases which spin a turbine to
generate electricity. Combined-cycle technology - Oil
is first combusted in a combustion turbine, using the
heated exhaust gases to generate electricity.

SOLAR ENERGY
Solar technologies convert sunlight into electrical
energy either through photovoltaic (PV) panels or
through mirrors that concentrate solar radiation.
This energy can be used to generate electricity or
be stored in batteries or thermal storage.
TRIDAL POWER

In simple terms, a tidal energy works via a turbine

works like a wind turbine, with blades rotating 12-to-
18 times a minute depending on tide strength. The
turbine is connected to a gearbox that turns a
generator, creating electricity.

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Geothermal power plants use steam to
produce electricity. The steam comes from
reservoirs of hot water found a few miles or
more below the earth's surface. The steam
rotates a turbine that activates a generator,
which produces electricity.
COGENERATION
Cogeneration or combined heat and power (CHP) is the on-site generation of electricity
from waste heat. When generating electricity from coal, natural gas or nuclear power only
a fraction of the actual energy content released during combustion is converted into
electricity.

SUMMARY
In this PPT we have seen many different types and ways of generating power for
residential purposes. With multiple different sources for generating power a few being
coal, nuclear, wind and solar to name a few. These sources are used to generate power
and electricity as a few of the generators are of coal power, water or hydro power, wind
power, oil, natural gas, nuclear and solar power generators which generate power and
electricity for consumption. We also see what are power plants and what they are used
for. Also seeing their various types of different power plants and what source materials
are used at their core to generate power.
