LESSON 2
LESSON 1 REVIEW
 What is a transformer?

 What are its uses?

 How does it operate?

 How to derive equations for the ideal

transformer
LESSON 2 OVERVIEW
 How to include winding resistances and
leakage flux and magnetising branch in
transformer equivalent circuit

 How to perform efficiency calculations with

these parameters
NON IDEAL TRANSFORMER
 Winding Resistances

 Each winding has a resistance which we

designate as R1 for primary and R2 for
secondary
LEAKAGE FLUXES
 Not all flux flows through transformer core

 Flux from both primary and secondary

windings flow through air and do not link
with each other

 Known as leakage flux

Example 4.3
 A 23 kVA, 2300/230 V, 60 Hz, step-down
transformer has the following resistance and
leakage reactances:
 R =4Ω, R =0.04Ω, X = 12Ω, X =0.12Ω

 The transformer is operating at 75% of rated
load. If the power factor is 0.866 leading,
determine the efficiency of the transformer
