The Writing Process: pre-writing, writing, and revising

The process can broken down into the following sequences:


1. discovering ideas by pre-writing
2. finding thesis statement
3. developing a thesis statement with supporting details
4. organizing the details using an outline
5. writing paragraph in the first draft
6. revising the draft; and
7. editing and proofreading

A thesis statement is the
central idea of an essay.
Formulating Thesis Statement
comes as a result of pre-writing.It is the product of thinking about your ideas, seeking
evidence, and looking for relationship between these.

Whatever thesis statement you come up initially is called working statement


Example:
High school seniors become more responsible because of joining the Reserve Officers
Training Corps Program .

High school seniors who join the Reserve Officers Training Corps program develop better
leadership skills because of the discipline instilled in them by the program.
GENERAL SUBJECT SPECIFIC TOPIC THESIS STATEMENT

1. Sports Being part of a high school


basketball team is a good training
ground for an athlete who wants
to play for a college basketball
theme.
2. Facebook Face-to-face conversation are
Interactions more meaningful than facebook
interactions because they are
more personal.
Characteristics of an Effective

Thesis Statement
1.Respond to the assignment by
following instructions
2.Expresses the main idea in one or
two sentences
3.Focuses on a specific issue
4.States a stand on the topic
5.Says something meaningful by
answering the questions: “So what?”
“How?” “Why?”
6.Previews the rest of the essay by
being placed in the introduction
7.Reflects a tone and point of view
appropriate to the identified
purpose and audience
