Overview

Hydropower is a wide industry that we often do not realize the

potential of when we only think of dams. OTEC(Ocean Thermal
Energy Conversion) also exists, making use of temperature
differences in the ocean to generate electricity.
What is Hydro-Power

01 Hydropower is the general term for power generated from water. This can be
done in numerous ways, from dams to OTEC, and even in nuclear power
plants(more on that later).

02 Hydropower commonly uses turbines to generate electricity, powered by the

water flowing through it.

03 OTEC uses the temperature difference between deep ocean water and high
ocean water to cause water to flow through a turbine.
Usage of Hydro-Power

The production of hydro-power in the USA accounts for

seven percent of the used power. World wide power
does not have any accurate statistic.
Benefits and Drawbacks

Some major benefits are that it is renewable,

powered by the water cycle, and relatively long
lasting compared to solar panels. It also will be
able to be used until the world water cycle
collapses.

The main downfall is it is requires a water source.

Compared to other sources hydro-power is often

less expensive
Surprising Information
Only three percent of the United States 80,000 dans generate power

Niagara Falls was the site of the country’s first hydro electric facility

Hydro-power makes up about half the renewable electricity created

Government and Realism
The government has been supporting hydro-power for a long time, with
the Tennessee Valley Authority being one of the biggest programs related
to hydropower done. It is also highly realistic to be used as a source, still
being used and having been used since ancient times for mechanical
power.
