Basic Navigation
Why do we need Basic Navigation Skills?

• Help us stay on course during expeditions

• Important during survival situations


o Search for help
o Lead us to safety
• Not solely dependent on GPS devices, signal or battery
• Comes in handy when the following happens:
o No GPS signal
o GPS devices run out of battery 2

Terrain Features
1. Hilltop (highest part of the hill)
2. Ridges (continuous line of high ground)
3. Saddles (lowest point)
4. Valleys (Groove bordered on the sides by higher
ground)
5. Depressions (hole in the ground)
6. Draws (less developed stream course)
7. Spurs (usually short, continuously sloping line of
the higher ground)
8. Cliffs (Vertical slopes)
