SOIL AND ITS TYPES
What is Soil?

Soil is the loose surface material that

covers most land. It consists of inorganic
particles and organic matter. Soil
provides the structural support to plants
used in agriculture and is also their
source of water and nutrients. Soils vary
greatly in their chemical and physical
properties.
Question

1. What is the Benefits of Soil

for you being human?
What is the Benefits of Soil?

Healthy soils are essential for healthy plant

growth, human nutrition, and water filtration.
Soil helps to regulate the Earth's climate and
stores more carbon than all of the world's
forests combined.Soils support roots and keep
them upright for growth.Soil is natural
resource that can be categorised into different
soil types,
LAYER OF SOIL
ORGANIC LAYER - Organic -
The organic layer also called
the humus layer is a thick
layer of plant remains such as
leaves and twigs.
Topsoil - composed of
organic matter and
minerals. This layer is the
primary layer where
plants and organisms
live.

Subsoil - This layer is

made primarily of clay,
iron, and organic matter
which accumulated
through a process called
Parent material - This layer is
called the parent material
because the upper layers
developed from this layer. It
is made up mostly of large
rocks.

Bedrock - The bottom layer

is several feet below the
surface. The bedrock is
made up of a large solid
mass of rock.
Question
1. What will you do to engage
students for studying soil?

2. How important for you is studying

soil ?
Different Type of Soils

Sandy soil - is light, warm,

dry and tends to be acidic
and low in nutrients. Sandy
soils are often know as
light soils due to their high
proportion of sand and little
clay.
Clay - particles are
packed together tightly.It
is sticky when wet and
has the finest texture.

Loam- it is a mixture of
sand and clay .It contains
large amount of decaying
plants and animals.
Silt Soils- When deposits
of silt are compressed
and the grains are
pressed together, rocks
such as siltstone form.
Silt is created when rock
is eroded, or worn away,
by water and ice.
Peaty Soil - is the LEOPARD

Red soil - is a type of soil that
typically develops in warm,
temperate, and humid climates
and comprise approximately
13% of Earth's soils. Red soils
contain large amounts of clay
and are generally derived from
the weathering of ancient
crystalline and metamorphic
rock.
