SOCIOLOGY

In 1839, Auguste Comte, a French Philospher, coined the term,
‘Sociology’. He is considered as ‘Father of Sociology’.
Sociology is derived from two words,’ societus’ means society,
[Latin word] & ‘logos’ [Greek word] means study of.

 Some other definitions:-


• ‘ The scientific study of society’----- Gidding and Gidding.
• ‘Study of relationship between man and his environment’-----
H.P. Fair Child.

 From all the definitions of sociology, we can list out the


following terms:-
 The sociology is science of society.
 It studies the social relationships.
 It is the study of social life.
 It deals with social actions.
 It studies social systems.
 Nature of Sociology :-
Sociology as a science: It emerged as a special discipline
among as science of society, It uses scientific methods,
investigation and different bodies of knowledge.
1. It studies social phenomenon: It uses scientific mehods. It is
way of dealing with ideas, careful observations,analysed and
organised.
2. It is factual: It deals with facts only, to solve the problems.
3. It frames law & attempts the predict : Science can make
prediction on the basis of universal and law relating to the
problem solving approach.
4. It is veridical :- It prove true at every verification and re-
verification.
5. It is an Independent Science.
6. It is a Social Science and not a Physical Science.
 SOME OPPOSITE VIEWS ABOUT NATURE
OF SOCIOLOGY :-
1. It lacks experimentally: It deals with humans
relationship, which can’t measured, weighted, see or
analyse.
2. Inability to measure subject matter.
3. It lacks perfect exactness.
4. It cannot make predictions correctly.
5. Sociology is the scientific study of human society and
social behaviour. 
6. Sociology is a discipline in
social sciences concerned with
human society and
human social activities.
 USE OF STUDY OF SOCIOLOGY :-
• It makes scientific study of society.
•It is a fast growing discipline.
• It studies the role of institutions, through the knowledge &
relationship with social environment like family, religion, school,
government policies.
• It helps for understanding and planning of society.
• It helps in solvation of social problems.
• It contributes to understand human culture.
• It adds to the knowledge of society.
• It identifies good government
with community.
• It keeps update informations .

APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE OF SOCIOLOGY
IN PHYSIOTHERAPY :-
• The professional like nurses and physiotherapists who spend
most of their time with the clients should have through
knowledge about society, environmental influences, family
back-ground cultural, economical benefits.
• Sociology studies the relationship between Human Beings.
• Physiotherapists have to establish good interpersonal
relationship, wins the confidentiality of the client.
• The process of client care is essentially a social activity.
•Nearly 75% of Physiotherapists is performed within the
homes of disabled, it have more easily to understand the socio-
economic, socio- cultural background, nature of family.
• Hence, therapists can treat the client in
a manner by which the client may be able
to recover from his ailment quickly.
APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE OF
SOCIOLOGY IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY :-
• Occupational Therapy (OT) is otherwise called as activity
oriented therapy.
• Occupational therapy (OT) is a form of rehabilitation that helps
people with health challenges re-engage in meaningful daily
activities.
•Occupational therapy is a profession within healthcare. It is the
use of assessment and intervention to develop, recover, or
maintain the meaningful activities, or occupations, of individuals,
groups, or communities.
.
• Occupational therapists (OTs) focus on education,
functional training, and participation in everyday
activities.
• Occupational therapy enables people of all ages live
life to its fullest by helping them to promote health,
make lifestyle or environmental changes, and prevent or
live better with—injury, illness, or disability.
