Strengthening Reading
Competencies of Select Grade-4 Pupils
in San Pedro Elementary School
II. LOCATION
The implementation of the project will held at Brgy.San Pedro Batangas City. According to the
2020 PSA Census, Brgy. San Pedro Batangas City has 3,984. Most of the resident in the said area
are students, parents, construction worker and unemployed.

IV. Type of Community Service
The project Strengthening Reading
Competencies of Select Grade 4 Students in
San Pedro Elementary School belongs to
Capability Building Training which promotes
literacy through reading enrichment.
V. Department / College Involve
 The proponent belong to College of
Teacher Education (CTE). The proponent is
currently taking Bachelor of Elementary
Education and take the literacy service also
fall to National Service Training Program
(NSTP) in Batangas State University.

VII. Cooperating Partners
The cooperating partners of the proponent to make the
project proposal successful are the followings:
 SK Council - help the proponent by providing the facility
during literacy service.
 Teacher- assist the proponent to handle the beneficiaries.
VIII. Beneficiaries
 There are five pupils which constitute for being the
primary beneficiaries in this project proposal. Since they are
struggling in reading, its beneficial for them since they can
learn how to read by using some strategies and some
activities.
 The parents of the selected students are the secondary
beneficiaries of this project and it is because it will not
waste their time on teaching their children on how to read.
IX. RATIONALE
Covid 19 pandemic has huge impact to the students in San Pedro Elementary School. It also
affect their learnings and reading skills.
A child reading skill is important to their success or improvement in school to achieve their
goal. Reading also improve their communication and language skill and reading can be a
imaginative time for children. Reading makes a big difference to students educational performance.
Upon assessing the community needs assessment tool being surveyed with the Grade 4 teacher of
San Pedro Elementary School, the result came out that most of the students struggling in the aspect
of reading. Out of 40 students, 3 are facing difficulty in the aspect of numeracy. On the other hand,
5 out of 40 students are encountering difficulty in reading. This project entitled “Strengthening
Reading Competencies of Select Grade-4 Students in San Pedro Elementary School” aims to
strengthen the reading competence of the students in the said school. To improve their reading skill
and to develop their reading competence through reading activities and utilizing various strategies.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
The project proposal aims to
strengthen the reading competence of
the select grade 4 pupils and to improve
their reading skills.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
 Conduct an orientation with the parents of the primary beneficiaries and prepare different instructional
materials needed.
 Recognize simple paragraphs and use resources such as dictionaries and thesaurus to find the
meaning of the given words.
 Identify meanings of unfamiliar words through structural analysis (words and affixes; prefixes and
suffixes)
Identify different meanings of content specific words (denotation and connotation)
Get the meaning of words through word association (analogy) and classification
Use context clues to find meaning of unfamiliar words: definition, exemplification
Use clear and coherent sentences employing appropriate grammatical structures: Kinds of nouns –
Mass Nouns and Count Nouns, Possessive Nouns, Collective Nouns
 Use personal pronouns in sentence.
 Identify the structure, purpose and language feature of different text types, e.g. narrative, information
report, procedure, argument
 Note significant details of various text types.
XI. Description of the Project
The proponent prepared various activities and strategies to make the project proposal
successful. These activities approaches are the student-centered approach, collaborative
activities and distribution of reading materials. In terms of student – centered approach, it is
the time where the proponents will teach the pupils as whole. The collaborative activities
consist of educational games that will engage them to happy learning and various group
activities which the pupils will group to have a reading session and reading activities that
enhance their reading skills. The proponent will also distribute reading materials and school
supplies to ensure the sustainability of the project.
The cooperating partners of this project are the SK Council of Brgy. San Pedro, Batangas
City, who will provide the facility to be use during literacy services. On the other hand, the
Grade 4 teacher of the said school will assist and help the proponent to handle the
beneficiaries. There will also be a letter of consent, certification of recognition, appreciation,
participation for the parents of our pupils and from SK council.

XIV. FINANCIAL PLAN, COST OF
THE PROJECT AND PROPOSE
EXPENDITURES
To make the implementation of the project, the proponent will provide for each week’s
expenses to support and provide the needs of the service as well as the beneficiaries. All the
materials, food packages will be assessed and liquidated for the auditing analysis.

XV. MONITORING AND
EVALUATION MECHANICS OF
THE PROJECT
The proponent will conduct mid – Evaluation and Final
Evaluation among pupils. This can help to determine if the
pupils are learning and improving their reading skills to
assess if the project is successful or not. These mid and final
evaluations can be done through interview. To review the
progress of the project including the achievements and
limitation, the proponents will provide their weekly report
to the NSTP instructor Mr. Mark Glenn P. Celis.
XVI. PLAN TO ENSURE THE
SUSTAINABILITY OF THE
PROJECT
To ensure the sustainability of the project, along with the
utilization of various activities the proponent will provide
reading materials for each beneficiary. Additionally, the
proponent will communicate with the parents of the pupils
and give them some suggestion that will help their children
to continue enriching their reading skills. This can also help
them to have exposure to the public and help the pupils to
boast their confidence as they being mold for the best
version of themselves.
