Energy

• Energy is a measure of the change imparted to a system.

• It is given to an object when a force does work on the object.
• The amount of energy transferred to the object equals the work done.
• When an object does work, it loses an amount of energy equal to the
work it does.
• Energy and work have the same units, Joules (J). Energy, like work, is
a scalar quantity.
• An object that is capable of doing work possesses energy.
Potential Energy
Potential Energy
• The gravitational potential energy of a body is its energy due to its
position or elevation.
• It is the energy possessed by an object because of the gravitational
interaction.
• In falling through a vertical distance (h),a mass (h) can do work the
amount (mgh).
• We define the GPE or Gravitational Potential Energy of an object
relative to an arbitrary zero level, often the Earth’s surface.
Kinetic Energy
• The energy or stored capacity for performing work possessed by a
moving body, by virtue of its momentum called kinetic energy.
• It is the energy possessed by an object because it is in motion. If an
object of mass (m) is moving with a speed (v)
Law of Conservation of
Energy
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but only
transformed to one kind to another.
Sample Problems
• Calculate the kinetic energy of a 100kg car traveling at 60mi/hr.
• If a 3slugs ball is thrown with a velocity of 6m/s, what is its KE in ft-
lbs?
• What is the potential energy of a .3kg ball lifted to a height of 5m
above the ground?
