SITE LOCATION : Chenkal choola at Thiruvananthapuram

ABOUT SITE AND PROJECT :

• Chenkal choola is situated at the eastern side of Secretariat.


• The earth from this place was taken to make bricks for the construction of Secretariat. Thus this
place got its name.
• The quarry was filled with waste materials and earth brought from outside.
• Later many settlers occupied this area and slums developed.
• The slums were crowded with huts with no proper access.
• The drainage systems were very poor.
• The state government decided to construct permanent houses for the settlers.
• Kerala state construction corporation during 1978-90 completed 528 houses in 1st,2nd and 3rd
stages.In the 4th stage 88 houses were completed .total 616 houses were constructed.
• In 2003 the Thiruvananthapuram corporation decided to construct 160 more houses for remaining
settlers as part of slum clearance and rehabilitation.

1.Valmiki Ambedkar Avas Yojana
Rs 40000/house for 160 houses - Rs.64.0 Lakh
2.Kerala Development Project - Rs. 70.0 Lakh
3.Govt. of Kerala - Rs.100.0 Lakh
4.Thiruvananthapuram corp. - Rs.33.68 Lakh

In addition the corporation will be providing the amenities such as landscaping, water supply electricity connection, street lights, drainage, improvement
of road etc. The approximate cost req for the above work is Rs. 50.0 lakh. This fund will be incurred from corporation.
