I) TERMS
A
Central Angle: (aka Sector Angle)
An angle created by two radii’s.
A central angle must be at the O
center of the circle AOB

AOB “contains” / “subtends” chord AB

B
Inscribed Angle
C
An angle created by two chords
Inscribed angles must be on the
circumference of the circle E CED

CED “contains” / “subtends” chord CD

II) PROPERTY #1) DIAMETER INSCRIBES 90° ANGLE

1. The inscribed angle of a semi-circle (diameter) is equal to 90°

II) PROOF FOR PROPERTY #1)

Here’s a proof why this angle is 90°

b b if it is contained by the diameter
a
Draw a radius to the corner
Now we have 2 isosceles triangles
a All 3 angles in a triangle add to 180°
2a  2b  180
This angle is “a” + “b” a  b  90
Ex: Find the value of “x” in each diagram:
5
x
43

43
x

“x” is the length of the radius The triangle on the left is an

Since the angle 12 2  52  d 2 isosceles triangle b/c two sides
is 90° it must be are made with the radius

a right triangle 144  25  d The angle at the top is 90°
Use the Pythago- 169  d 2 because it is inscribed by the
rean thm. to find diameter
the diameter 13  d x  90  43
“x’ is half the diameter x  6.5 x  47
2. Central Angles containing equal chords/arcs are equal
A D Suppose the two chords were equal
in length: AB and CD
OR even the chords that they subtend

if AB  CD  AOB  COD
or
B  
AB  CD
C
Then the central angles contained by the
chords/arcs will be equal in value
Reason: when you rotate the chord or arc, the central angle
doesn’t get any bigger or smaller. It stays the same

In contrast, if the central angles were equal, then the arcs and
chords must also be equal

FIND THE VALUE OF THE “X”:

Since the chord are equal in The sum of all the angles in a
length the central angles that straight line add to 180°
contain are also equal
So the angle at the top is equal
Therefore, angle “x” is equal to 65° to 64°
If the central angles are equal
then the chords they contain
are also equal
x  12
