Classification of communication

Communication is classified on the basis of two groups:-

1. Number of persons (receivers)

2. Medium employed
Classification of communication

1. On the basis of number of receivers:

►Intrapersonal Communication

►Interpersonal Communication

►Group Communication

►Mass Communication
Classification of communication

• Intrapersonal communication- It is talking to one self in ones own mind.

• Interpersonal communication- It is the exchange of messages between two persons

• Group communication- It can be among small or large groups in which all


individuals retain there individual identity.

• Mass communication-It occurs when the message is send to large groups of


people. In this process each person becomes a faceless individual with almost no
opportunity for personal response or feedback.

2. On the basis of medium employed:-

►Verbal communication
► Non-Verbal communication
►Meta communication
Classification of communication

►Verbal communication-It means communicating with words,


written or spoken. It consists of speaking, listening, writing,
reading and thinking.

►Non-Verbal communication-It includes using of pictures, signs,


gestures, and facial expressions for exchanging information
between persons. It is done through sign language, action
language, or object language.

 Meta communication – here the speakers choice of words


unintentionally communicates something more than what
the actual words state. Ex – a flattering remark like, ‘ I
have never seen you so smartly dressed’

 Communication to inform is directed by the desire to


expose, develop and explain the subject. It focuses on the
subject of the communication. Information is versatile to
any business organization , communication aims at
sharing and understanding information the information
required can supplied through spoken or written language
or through symbols, signs or signals
To Persuade

 The communicator may seek primarily to persuade the


reader in such a form of communication the focus is on
the receiver and not the message .Persuasion is the act of
influencing the other person to change his attitude ,belief ,
feelings or thoughts. essentially, all communication is a
deliberate and intentional act of persuasion .
To Persuade
Conditions for successful communication

►The message is properly understood.


►The purpose of the sender is fulfilled.
►The sender and receiver of the message remain linked
through feedback.
►Rule of five – there are 5 steps in the process of
communication – receive, understand, accept, use and give
a feedback. – Keith Davis
Characteristic of successful communication

 Francis J Bergin advocates that there are 7 C’s to


remember in verbal communication. They are equally
applicable to written communication. they are :
7 C’s or Characteristics of Successful
communication

1. Candidness
2. Clarity
3. Completeness
4. Conciseness
5. Concreteness
6. Correctness
7. Courtesy
