WASTE
MANAGEMENT
IN DHAKA CITY
Farruha Munawar
Class VI, Roll 6, Section D (Proton), Bangladesh International School & College
INTRODUCTION

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, has a

population of approximately 21 million.
Managing waste is one of the daunting
problems in Dhaka. Most scientific,
hygienic and cost effective waste
management system is to be evolved to
keep our city clean.
WASTE PRODUCTION IN
DHAKA CITY
 The capital produces around 6000 tons of domestic
waste every day.

 About 2,700-2,800 tons/day), which is a big problem for

the City Corporations to manage as DCC (DSCC &
DNCC) can lift only 50% of it.

 Around 9500 cleaners are employed to clean 360 sq.

kilometers of the city.
CLASSIFICATION OF WASTE

Household waste Industrial waste Biomedical waste or hospital waste

 PRESENT CONDITION OF WASTE MANAGEMENT

• Primary collection and accumulation: Waste

collecting Workers are doing the house-to-house
1 collection and then put those wastes into nearby
dustbins or containers using handcart and van.

2 • Transportation: By using
compactor trucks and containers.
open trucks,

• Final disposal/Dumping: Wastes are then

3 transferred from secondary transfer station to
central Waste Disposal Centre.

4 • Recycling: DCC has not yet any waste

recycling project.
CONSEQUENCES OF RUNNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Open air dumping is Very difficult to

unhygienic separate the
recyclable materials.

Hazardous and toxic

Produces pungent wastes contaminate
odor. soil and ground water.
CONSEQUENCES OF RUNNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Toxic and heavy metals are

mixing into the food chain.
CONSEQUENCES OF RUNNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Burning of Chemical and

waste causes oil spills
air pollution contaminate
and promotes water that kills
spreading of water and
diseases. wildlife
animals.
PROPOSAL FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

Collect the wastes in separate bins

where organic and inorganic wastes
will be collected from household and
other sources of wastes.

For this, public awareness building

program is also proposed.

Waste Separation
PROPOSAL FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

The household wastes will be dumped

in two different ways.

The organic waste will be used as raw

materials of fertilizers and for
producing food for domestic animals
as well as it could be used in the
biogas plants.
PROPOSAL FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

The inorganic wastes will be sent to the selected

dumping stations and separated as recycled,
renewable and hazardous part. The re-usable and
recyclable products are polythene, plastic,
rubber, glass and ceramic, e- wastes etc.

The non-renewable and other hazardous wastes

from industrial and biomedical wastes will be
sent for incineration.
PROPOSAL FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT

As the existing open dump

incineration is much hazardous, we
propose to introduce closed system
known as Waste-To-Energy (WTE)
plants which are used by many
developed and developing countries
of the world.
PROPOSAL FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT
CONCLUSION

Waste problem is one of the burning issues of Dhaka city right now.

This is the high time to take immediate action rather than investing our
valuable revenue to less important sectors.

So waste management should be started from now on, may be from our kitchen
first.
CONCLUSION

Before throwing a waste we must think about the reuse of it.

However, all these actions will go in vein until we are aware by

ourselves as well as give proper education to the people of our
surroundings and thus we can hope to have a beautiful Dhaka
City which we all are dreaming.
