NTPC-The Power Giant
 Formally known as National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd.

 Established in Nov’1975.

 Arup Roy Choudhury is chairman and MD.

 Installed Capacity 43,128 MW.

 Projects 17coal based , 7 gas based & 9 in JVs.

 Planned capacity 75,000 MW by 2017.

 With only 19.24 % of the all India installed capacity, it generates about 26.7 % of
power.

 Annual turnover of Rs. 73,904 cr. with profit of Rs. 13,834 Cr. for the year 2013-14.

Share of Coal in Power
Generation

•India’s Coal Reserves are estimated to be 206 billion tones. Present consumption is
about 450 million tones.
•Cost of coal for producing 1 unit of electricity is Rs 0.75.
•Cost of Gas for producing 1 unit of electricity is Rs 1.20.

General Layout of Thermal Power
Plant

Main Equipments of Power Plant
1. Coal handling plant
2. Pulverizing plant
4. Boiler
5. Turbine
6. Generator
7. Condenser
8. Ash handling plant

7
Coal handling plant

•The function of coal handling plant is automatic feeding of coal to the boiler

• A thermal power plant burns enormous amounts of coal.

•A 200MW plant may require around 2000 tons of coal daily.

8
Pulverizing plant

 In modern thermal power plant , coal is pulverized i.e. ground to dust

like size and carried to the furnace in a stream of hot air.

 Pulverizing is done in pulverizing mill.

 Pulverizing mill is further classified in three parts:

 Contact mill
 Ball mill
 Impact mill

9
Boiler

10
Turbine

 A turbine is a rotary mechanical device that

extracts energy from a fluid flow and converts
it into useful work.

 It consists one moving part called a rotor

assembly.

 Steam turbines are used for the generation of

electricity in thermal power plants.

 In thermal power plant turbine is sub divided

in three parts:
 HPT
 IPT
 LPT

11
Generator
 An electric generator is a device that
converts mechanical energy to electrical
energy.

 It is based upon the principle of

electromagnetic induction.

 the magnitude of EMF generates by generator

is given by:
E=4.44φFN volts

 Generators provide nearly all of the power

for electric power grids.

12
Condenser

13
Ash handling plant
 The percentage of ash in coal varies from 5% in good quality coal to about 40% in
poor quality coal.

 Power plants generally use poor quality of coal , thus amount of ash produced by it
is pretty large.

 A modern 2000MW plant produces about 5000 tons of ash daily.
