Teacher: Lcdo. Raúl Pesantes

WHAT IS A TOOL?

• A tool is an item or implement used

for a specific purpose.

• The purpose of a tool is to make easier

the realization of mechanical tasks
that require the application of a
particular physical strength, allowing
the reduction of force.
Hand Tools

• A hand tool is any tool that is not

a power tool – that is, one
powered by hand rather than by
an engine.

• The Hand tools are generally less

dangerous than power tools
Hand Tools.

• Hammers: It´s for pushing

something by means of
hitting.
• Pliers: Most of the pliers are for
getting a grip, cutting, lock
something and for making some
bend gates on an easier way.
• Screwdrivers: It helps to take out or to
put a bolt inside of different types of
Surface.

• The screwdriver comes in different size

and type.

• The most common types of screwdriver

are: flap tip, Pozidriv and torx
• The sockets are used to install
or remove bolts and nuts

• The sockets have different

dimensions and sizes
• A torque wrench is a tool used to
precisely apply a specific torque to a
fastener such as a nut or bolt.

• A torque wrench is used where the

tightness of screws and bolts is crucial.
• Wrenches: There are three types of
wrench, the open-end, the box-end, Mix.
This are for taking nuts.

• The wrenches are used to loosen and

tighten bolts and nuts.
• Adjustable wrench: this is like the other types
of wrench but with the difference that this
one can be adjustable to the size that we
want or that we need.

• The adjustable wrench is used to hold the

bolts and nuts, more don't to tightening and
loosening
TAP AND DIE SET

• Taps and dies are tools used to create

screw threads, which is called threading.
• A tap is used to cut or form the
female portion of the mating pair (nut) .
A die is used to cut or form the male
portion of the mating pair (a bolt).
Taps and dies

Taps cut threads in holes drilled to an exact size.

A die cuts threads on round rod or studs.

• When the handle reaches the preset torque, the
wrench clicks.
• Dial
• A dial indicates the amount of torque exerted.
• Digital read out
• Is usually the most accurate design.
Hand Tool Safety

• Use the proper tool for the job.

• Use the correct size wrench or socket.
• Use box-end wrench or socket whenever possible.
• Always pull on a wrench.

Steps for Using a Service Manual

• Select the appropriate manual for the vehicle

being serviced.
• Use the table of contents to locate the
applicable section.
• Use the index at the front of the section to
locate the required information.
Steps for Using a Service Manual

• Carefully read the information and study the

illustrations and diagrams.
• Follow the required steps and procedures.
• Adhere to all of the given specifications and
safety precautions.
Lifting Tools
• Hydraulic floor jack
• Is used to raise vehicle off the ground.
• Is used with safety stands.
• Pneumatic jack
• Uses air to raise vehicle.
• Is used with safety stands.
Lifting Tools
• Safety stand
• Is used to support a vehicle when raised.
• Hydraulic lift
• Is safest lifting tool.
• Is also called a hoist.
Lifting Tools (Cont’d)
• Engine hoist
• Is sometimes called a cherry picker.
• Uses hydraulic pressure to lift an engine from a vehicle.
Summary
• Repairing the modern automobile requires the use of many different
hand and power tools.
• It is crucial to use the proper amount of torque when tightening
fasteners on any part of a vehicle, particularly the engine.
Summary (Cont’d)
• Metric and SAE size wrenches are not interchangeable.
• Carelessness or mishandling of power tools can cause serious injury.
• The primary source of repair and specification information for any
vehicle is the manufacturer’s service manual.
