Basic terms
Mental health

A state of well-being in which an individual can realize his


or her own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life,
work productively and make a contribution to the
community. ( WHO, 2001 )

Stress

The physiological or psychological response to internal or


external stressors. Stress involves changes affecting nearly
every system of the body, influencing how people feel and
behave.
Basic terms
Anxiety

An emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried


thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure. 

Depression

A negative affective state, ranging from unhappiness and


discontent to an extreme feeling of sadness, pessimism, and
despondency, that interferes with daily life. 
Prevalence
• Among different professions, students and healthcare
professionals were found to experience stress, anxiety, and
depression more than others
• 55% show moderate, severe or extremely severe
depression symptoms
• 56% reported more stress; 60% show anxiety symptoms
• In 2019, at least one student died by suicide every hour
• Total suicides in 2019: 10,335 Period Suicides % Increase
