TAJIKISTAN

Tajikistan Spelling Bee

Rules and Procedures
• Speller: Step up to the microphone and face the pronouncer.
• Pronouncer: Pronounces the word two times.
• If there is a homophone, the pronouncer will give you the definition.
• There: “There” expresses the existence or location of something, i.e. “Please place the money there.”
• Their: “Their” is a possessive pronoun, i.e. “This is their money.”

• Speller:
• Say the word.
• Spell the word – say each letter distinctly.
• Say the word again.
• You won’t be eliminated if you don’t say the word at the beginning or at
the end of spelling.
HELP FOR SPELLERS:
“Can you repeat the word, please?”
“Can I have a definition, please?”
“Can you use it in a sentence, please?”
“Can I have the part of speech?” i.e. noun, verb,
adjective, etc.
“Can you give me the language of origin, please?”
“ Are there any alternate pronunciations?”
IMPORTANT!!!
• Speller: You may stop and start over. However, once a letter is
pronounced, you cannot change it or rearrange the letters. You must
continue in the same order.
• For example, “School.” “S H, I mean, S C H O O L.”
• You will be eliminated because you changed the order of the letters.

• Timekeeper:
• Starts the clock after the Pronouncer says the word two times.
• Speller has two minutes to spell the word. Speller can ask for a
definition, to repeat the word, etc., but it is part of the two minutes.
• At 1 minute and 30 seconds, the time keeper holds up a sign that says
“30 seconds left.”
• Judges:
• The three judges are in control of the Bee. Their decisions are
final.
• After a speller finishes spelling the word, one of the judges will
say “CORRECT” if the word is spelled correctly. If the word is
spelled incorrectly, one of the judges will ring a bell.
• If the work is spelled incorrectly, the pronouncer will spell the
word.

• Everyone: When a speller is spelling a word, please be quiet so that

the speller can concentrate. Do not whisper letters, do not translate
words into Tajik, Russian and/or any other language. Thank you!
• The Spelling Bee is conducted in rounds.
• Spellers spell one word in each round.
• Upon incorrectly spelling a word, the speller is eliminated and
can join the audience. All spellers eliminated in the same round
are tied for the same place.
• If no contestant spells a word correctly in a round, all contestants
remain in the competition.
• All new rounds begin with contestants spelling in their original
order.
• Last round:
• If only one contestant spells a word correctly during a round, the
contestant will move alone to the next round and be given the
opportunity to spell the next word.
• If the contestant spells the word correctly, he/she will be declared
the winner. If the contestant spells the word incorrectly, all
contestants remaining in the bee at the start of the previous round
will remain in the competition.
• There will be prizes for the top three spellers: the winner and two
runner-ups. If there is no round in which there are three remaining
spellers, in order to determine the second runner-up, all contestants
who spelled a word correctly in the most recent round will compete
in a run-off round to become the second runner-up.
