PENDAHULUAN
WHAT IS THIS THEORY ABOUT?
• Erikson maintained that personality develops in a
predetermined order through eight stages of psychosocial
development, from infancy to adulthood.
• During each stage, the person experiences a psychosocial
crisis which could have a positive or negative outcome
for personality development.
• Successful completion of each stage results in a healthy
personality and the acquisition of basic virtues.
• Failure to successfully complete a stage can result in a
reduced ability to complete further stages and therefore a
more unhealthy personality and sense of self.

also accept death without fear.
THESE STAGES OR CRISES CAN OCCUR
MORE THAN ONCE OR AT DIFFERENT

eg: For instance, a person may struggle with a lack of trust
beyond infancy.
LIMITATIO
NS HIS THEORY ALSO FOCUSES ON THE
ON THIS SOCIAL EXPECTATIONS THAT ARE
FOUND IN CERTAIN CULTURES, BUT
THEORY NOT IN ALL.
eg: the idea that adolescence is a time of searching for
identity might translate well in the middle-class culture of
the United States, but not as well in cultures where the
transition into adulthood coincides with puberty through rites
of passage and where adult roles offer fewer choices.
