Introduction

ABS-controlled braking ensures optimum vehicle

stability while minimizing the stopping distance.

During vehicle operation the ABS Electronic

Control Unit (ECU) continuously monitors all
wheel speed sensors.
Introduction

Important:

Tractor and Trailer ABS systems operate

independently of each other. Therefore,
systems will work together properly even if
they are not supplied by the same
manufacturer.
Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
Tractor ABS:
• Monitors and controls the
ABS
– Diagnosis ABS
malfunctions

– Stores failure-specific
fault codes

– Cab mount (consult

OEM manual for location
Pressure Modulator Valve
Tractor ABS:
• Regulates brake chamber
air pressure
• Houses the hold and
release solenoids
• Located at each brake
chamber or pair of brake
chambers
Wheel End Speed Sensors
Tractor :
• Steer axle:
– Inboard side of
steering knuckle
• Drive:
– Must remove wheel
and drum assembly
• Adjust by pushing
sensor until it touches
tone ring
ABS Light Tractor ABS:
• Lights steady for two-second
bulb check
• If light stays on after power-up
or during vehicle operation, a
fault has been detected.
• Blinks fault codes
• NOTE: In case of speed sensor
failure correction, ABS light
will stay on until vehicle
reaches 5mph to verify speed
sensor output
ATC Valve Tractor Drive axle:

• Option on all Tractor ABS

configurations.

• Applies full system

pressure to the relay
valve during traction
control operation.

• Provides differential side

to side braking at
controlled drive axles.
Disabling ATC
ATC MUST be disabled for Dyno-Testing

– Turn ignition key to “ON”

– Press and hold the diagnostic button for at least

three seconds and release

– ATC light turns “ON” and ABS light blinks 17-8

indicating ATC is disabled

– At next ignition cycle ATC will be reactivated

ATC Light Tractor ABS:

• Lights at key-ON and

remains lit until driver
presses brake pedal

• Flashes when ATC system

is activated.

• Stays lit when

communication on J-1939
Data link is lost.
ATC Operation (optional)

• During wheel spin, ECU enters into ATC mode.

ATC Operation (optional)

• ATC valve is activated supplying supply tank air

pressure to the relay or pressure modulation valves.
• ECU activates appropriate solenoids to apply brake
force to spinning wheel
ATC Operation (optional)

High speed operation :

• At speeds above 25 mph, the engine is
throttled back via the SAE J1922 or SAE J1939
data link to control spin out.
Low speed operation :
• At speeds below 25 mph, both engine control
and differential brake control are activated as
required to control wheel slip.
Relay / Breaker Panel
Tractor ABS:
• The OEM supplies two
circuit breakers and
either one or two
relays.

• One relay is used for

warning light control.
A second (optional)
relay may be used to
control a retarder. :
Diagnostic Port Connector
Tractor ABS:
• Industry standard
connector that
connects to the J-1587
diagnostic link.

• Also provides power

and ground for
diagnostic test
equipment.
Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
Trailer ABS:
• Monitors wheel speeds.
• Controls ABS valves.
• Diagnosis malfunctions.
• Stores fault codes.
• Monitors 2 or 4 sensors.
• Can control either 1 or 2
relay valves.
• More than 1 ECU may be
used on a trailer.
• Mounted to relay valve.
ECU Identification
Trailer ABS:
• This label is located
under the ECU cover.

Refer to the label for the:

• Eaton Part Number.
• Bosch Part Number.
• Serial Number.
• Date Code.
Relay Valve
Trailer ABS:

• Regulates brake chamber

air pressure.
• Houses hold and release
solenoids.
• Each relay can control
either 2 or 4 brake
chambers.
• Can be mounted to the
ECU, or stand alone and
be controlled by the ECU.
ABS Warning Lamp
Trailer ABS:

• Located on the road side

near the rear of the
trailer.
• Steady on warns driver
of problem.
• Capable of blinking
diagnostic codes.
• A cab mounted lamp is
optional.
Wheel End Speed Sensors
Trailer :
• Trailer axles:
– Must remove
wheel and drum
assembly
• Adjust by pushing
sensor until it
touches tone ring
Electrical Connector
Trailer ABS:
• The 7 way connector
is the same as those
used on non ABS
systems.

• Provides full time

power, secondary
power and ground for
the system.
Diagnostic Port Connector
Trailer ABS:
• Industry standard
connector that
connects to the J-1587
diagnostic link.

• Also provides power

and ground for
diagnostic test
equipment.
Optional ABS Configurations
Tractors
4 Channel (4S/4M )
• Standard configuration

6 Channel ( 6S/6M )
• Maximum performance

• Eliminates tire flat spotting

• Improved ATC performance

Optional ABS Configurations
Trailers
1 Channel ( 2S/1M )
• minimum requirement

2 Channel ( 2S/2M )
• Improved performance
• Reduces tire flat spotting

2 Channel ( 4S/2m )
• Maximum Performance
• Eliminates tire flat spotting
Reading ABS System Configuration
Tractor ABS:

• Ignition Key “on”.

• Press and hold diagnostic button for 1 second
but less than 3 and release.
• Wait for less than 1 second then press
diagnostic button again for at least one
second.
• A four digit configuration code will be
displayed at the ABS service light.
ABS System Configuration
Tractor ABS:
Configuring the ECU
Tractor ABS
ECU’s are factory configured:

– 4s-4m
– 6s-4m
– retarder control via engine data link.
Configuring the ECU
Tractor ABS:
Other options require the ECU to be configured:

– With ignition key “OFF” press and hold the

diagnostic button.

– Turn ignition key “ON” while pressing the

diagnostic button.

– Wait two seconds and release the diagnostic

button.
Configuring The ECU
Trailer ABS:
•The Trailer ABS system automatically configures
itself to any valid ABS system installed on the
trailer.

•The automatic configuration process occurs each

time the system receives power at the permanent
power input.

•In most cases the ECU receives its power from the
SAE J-560 AUX power connection.

Service Ranger Software Program

• Service PC must meet hardware
specifications.
• RP1210A compliant communications
adapter.
PLC (Power Line Carrier)

• Mandated by the National Highway Traffic

Safety Administration as of March 01, 2001.

• All Tractor and Trailer ECU’s manufactured

after March 1 must be PLC compliant.
PLC (Power Line Comunications)
What is it ?
• PLC is micro-chip technology that allows the
Trailer ABS ECU to communicate or send
fault information to the Tractor ABS ECU
through the blue power wire in the existing
J-560 connector.
• This technology allows for the trailer ABS
fault, to alert the driver via the ABS warning
light located on the dash of the tractor.
PLC (Power Line Carrier)

• Since PLC incorporates changes to the ECU

and wiring harness , changes have been
made to ECU configuration codes and Fault
code diagnostics.
Troubleshooting Flow Chart

• Always use the

flow chart found in
the appropriate
troubleshooting
guide to properly
diagnosis ABS
problems
Fault Code Retrieval
Tractor ABS:
Retrieving Fault codes:
• Turn the ignition key “on”.
• If vehicle is equipped with ATC, apply and
release brakes once before proceeding.
• Press and hold diagnostic button for at least
1 but less than 3 and release.
• Two digit blink codes will be displayed at the
ABS service light.
Fault Code Retrieval
Tractor ABS:
Fault Code Retrieval
Tractor ABS:
A 4.5-Second pause will occurs between blink codes.
