Grade 7 - Earth
Aside from the colorful
contributions of its regional tribes,
Mindanao is home to the largest
cultural minority in the Philippines
– The Muslims.
Brought by the Javanese and
Middle Eastern traders, Islam is
the religion of approximately 20
percent of the Philippine population.
They are known for their
mysticism, royalty, and beauty
which are evident in their music and
dances. Accompanied by the agong
and kulintang, Filipino Muslim
dance is marked intricate hand and
arm movement along with
shimmering costumes.
Foreign and Local Influences

To appreciate the gorgeous folkloric traditions of the

Philippines is to understand the dynamic fusion of different
influences from Spain, India, China, Japan, Arabia and a
multitude of its original indigenous tribes on the
Philippines’ “Mestizaje”. The virtues of this fusion can be
seen in all Philippine dances. One of the Philippine folk dance
is the Burong Talo.
What is Burong Talo folk dance?

Burung Talo is a dance in the

form of martial arts. Performers
portray a battle between a hawk
and a cat. This dance is
accompanied with lively beats
from gongs and drums as the
performers do acrobatic
movements.
History of Burong Talo

 From Sulu Province comes this

unique fighting dance of the Tausūg
(or Suluk) Tribe who are experienced
sailors known for their colourful boats
called ‘vintas’. They are superb
warriors as they are craftsmen who are
related to kin who live in Sabah
Malaysia who were under the Sultan
of Sulu in the Philippines.
Musical Characteristics of Burong Talo

Soldiers of the Sultan perform a self-

defense dance. Movements show
imitations of a fight between a cat and
hawk. With their acrobatic movements
and tough facial expressions, this dance
is highlighted with the accompanying
energetic beat of drums and gongs.
These tribal people have a rich musical
culture with a variety of musical
instruments, but their music and songs are
not meant for entertainment only. Their
songs are a living contact with their
ancestors and a source of ancient wisdom.
They believe that everything has a spirit
which must be respected for good fortune
and that bad spirits can cause illness and
misfortune.
