On your whiteboards, write

down what you ate and
drank yesterday. Which of
those foods or drinks do
you think could cause the
most damage to your teeth?
Why?
Teeth
Lesson 4
LO: I understand what causes cavities.

97% of all people in the world have cavities. Cavities are small holes
that are caused by bacteria feeding off sugar left in your mouth from
the food you eat. When the bacteria start feeding off the sugar, they
produce acid and this eats through the enamel on your teeth, causing a
hole in the tooth.
The bacteria that lives in your mouth is called plaque. You need to make
sure that you keep the amount of plaque in your mouth low. You can do
this by brushing your teeth twice a day. Plaque that does not get
removed by brushing can become hard and turn into tartar.
If you let tartar build up in your mouth, normally near your gums and in
between teeth, it can cause a disease called gingivitis or gum disease.
This makes the gums sore and red.
Brushing your teeth is really important because not only can it damage
your teeth and gums, it can also hurt your friendships. Not brushing
your teeth can make your breath smell. Also, letting bacteria build up in
your mouth can make you ill after a while.
So, how can you keep a healthy mouth? You need to brush your teeth
for at least 2 minutes twice a day, you should visit the dentist every six
months and try to eat and drink less sugary foods and drinks. Teeth
