natural forms resembling the stems and blossoms of plants
 The term "Art Nouveau" stemmed from the name of the
Parisian art gallery, called "La Maison de l'Art Nouveau",
owned by the avant-garde art-collector Siegfried Bing
(1838-1905), which showcased works created in the Art

Art Nouveau furniture style

Furniture created in the Art Nouveau style was prominent from the beginning of the 1890s to
the beginning of the First World War in 1914

Art nouveau furniture is generally characterized by delicately curving lines and floral motifs

This kind of furniture often has no straight lines at all. Chair backs and table legs curve
gracefully outward, often intersecting with decorative crosspieces.

It characteristically used forms based on nature, such as vines, flowers and water lilies, and
featured curving and undulating lines

It was usually made by hand, with a fine polished finish, rare and expensive woods, and fine
craftsmanship

labyrinthine designs in the surface
of the furniture, but other materials
also came into play including ivory,
gemstones, colored glass,
seashells, mirrors, and various
metals. Much of the Art Nouveau
interior design style completely
revolved around inlay as a
decorative technique.
