INSTITUTION OF TECHONOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

FINAL INTERNSHIP REPORT

HOSTING COMPANY- UNITY CONSTRUCTION PLC
INTERNSHIP DURATION- MAY-JUNE

PREPARED BY - Ashagrie Alene

Outline
Introduction
Internship program for civil engineering students is a system by
which students are introduced with the currently existing practical
construction world before graduation.
Intern students could use this opportunity to get some practical
knowledge in their respective fields and to scale up their theoretical
knowledge.
In our particular case, internship means a lot to the technology
students because of the fact that engineering more specifically the
construction sector is more of an applied science than being
predominantly dependent on the formal education gained from higher
institutions.

Objectives of internship:
The general objectives of the internship which are:
 Prepare students with valuable work-experience, to get the practical work
environment,
 Scaling-up the theoretical knowledge and synchronizing (coordinating) it with
the practical knowledge, and
 Develop business contacts, secure letters of recommendation and connect to
employers who can offer a full-time job after graduation.
General about Unity Engineering plc

• Unity Engineering plc was established in 1998 by four engineers in order to

contribute their experience in construction to the country.
• It has been serving a range of different private, governmental and nongovernmental
organizations for the last 15 years as building contractors’ class VI during its
establishment.
• Now, it has been upgraded to class І building contractors as a result of strong
dedication of its well experienced professionals to the growth of the company.

• The contract for the internship project was signed in 2016 G.C.
between University of Gondar as client and Unity engineering
construction PLC as a contractor.

• The internship project is cancer treatment center for university of

Gondar hospital and its purpose for giving medical treatments to
cancer caused people.

• Totally there are two blocks in the project those are Oncology center
and bunker.
THE OVERALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

ENTERY

The first challenge of this internship was to find a good hosting company where to spend From
may – June the internship period, and it wasn’t a simple task to find an actively involving
construction company in the country which is willing to host intern students in one of its sites.

However, finally I found this company named unity construction to getting accepted and being
approved to spend my internship period in one of their sites in Gondar university GCMHS
campus. Which the name of the project is Cancer treatment center.
Work pieces or tasks that we have been executing during our internship period were
divided in to two parts. These are:
 Site work

 Office work

The company performs some works like, form work, hollow block masonry work,
plastering work, cement screed & epoxy floor finish work, aluminum works and
gypsum work executed by sub-contractors.

The payment is issued for form work, HCB masonry wall, cement screed & epoxy
floor finish work, Aluminum work and plastering work are per m2.

Scaffolding and some other works are done by the monthly and daily employee
Bill of quantity

• Generally, bill of quantity is prepared in to two parts, sub structure and

super structure.

• Sub structure includes excavation and earth works, concrete works

and stone masonry work; and
• Super structure includes concrete work, roofing work, steel structure
work, HCB wall work, plastering work, metal work, floor and wall
finishing work, carpentry & joinery work, ceiling work, glazing work,
painting work, electrical installation work and sanitary installation
work etc.
Quantifying works
 my first real task was quantifying plastering and screed work per m2
for different rooms and aluminum doors and windows in No. from
1stfloor – 6th floor in a building for Oncology center. While quantifying
these items of work I was reading the dimensions from the
architectural drawings.

Chiseling
Quantity for plastering
preparing quantity for plastering work that should be requested for the
subsequent construction and for the purpose of payment to the contractor and
sub- contractors
The application of mortar to surfaces to be plastered is made using trowel and
wood float, and all plastering should be leveled. There are three types of coats
:
I. First coat (primary coat) ‘berera grief’.
Mix proportion, 1:3 (cement: sand by volume)
Spread by trowel and allowed to cure for 24 hours before applying second
coat.
Has minimum thickness of 5 mm.
II. Second coat ‘mullet or lessen:
Mix proportion, 1:3 (cement: sand by volume)
Has maximum thickness of 17mm.
Dried for 21days, before third coat applied.

 III. Third coat (gypsum coat)
 Mix proportion, (mix the gypsum powder and water sometimes
they have added some milk in the paste in order to retailed long
time)
 Has maximum thickness of 3mm.
 Should be finished truly and level, fine sand used for smooth
finish as final coat.
 NB—fine cote (third cote) are to be applicable when the wall
finish is to be finish by paint. In our project the fine cote is
omitted because of the gypsum finish of the wall .in this case
the wall is not smooth.

Quantity for screed work
 Quantity for screed work : preparing quantity for screed work
that should be requested for the subsequent construction and for
the purpose of payment to the contractor and sub-contractors.
Screed is a thin layer material that is placed on the top of the
concrete sub floor. There are three different types of screed
bonded , un bonded and floating. In my company screed made of
cement, sand and crushed stone aggregate/gravel and used the
method of bonded screed. Which means that the screed laid
directly in to the concrete surface .The layer of screed is covered
with decorative finish .

Quantity for Aluminum Work

preparing quantity for aluminum doors and windows work

that should be requested for the subsequent construction and
for the purpose of payment to the contractor and sub-
contractors. Aluminum weighs approximately one third as
much as steel or copper it is ductile and easily machined
and cast. In addition it has, it has excellent corrosion
resistance and durability. so it keeps looking good for
longer. Aluminum’s use that exceed that of any other metal.

PERFORMANC OF THE INTERNSHIP
• I have been actively involving on assigned works since the
beginning of the internship and was gaining experience in the
respective work sections that I were assigned to.
• The first week of the internship was almost a trial period for me
and other interns too by the company supervisors checking if we
are able to discharge my duties and tasks fully and responsibly.
• After the completion of the first month I developed the
confidence of the company supervisors that we could work on
any sections that we were assigned to.
OVERALL BENEFITS FROM INTERNSHIP
Owing to these facts, the following are skills or attributes gained from this 2-
month internship period.

1. Practical skills
2. Theoretical knowledge
3. Communication skill
4. Team playing skill
5. Leadership skill
6. Work ethics

7. Entrepreneurship skill
CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS

The company has some draw backs which I have noticed during our stay and hope
to see these recommendations incorporated into their system on their future projects.

 Practicing the usual trends only and lack of motivation towards new
approaches
 Negligence on employing assistance data collector for reliable data
collection on site activities
 Rushing on some tasks without being pre-notified which affects the
reliability and accuracy of the respective work task
 Negligence on construction safety rules and lack of safety tools
Problems and Recommendation
1. Blisteringof plastered surface: This is the formation of small patches of plaster
swelling out beyond the plastered surface, arising out of late slaking of lime particles in
the plaster.
2. Cracking: Cracking consists of formation of cracks or fissures in the plaster work result
in from the following reasons.
i. Imperfect preparation of background
ii. Structural defects in building
iii. Discontinuity of surface
iv. Movements in the background due to its thermal expansion or rapid drying
v. Movements in the plaster surface itself, either due to expansion or shrinkage.
vi. Excessive shrinkage due to application of thick coat
vii. Faulty workmanship.
4. Flaking: It is the formation of very loose mass of plastered surface, due to poor bond
between successive coats.

5. Uneven surface: This is obtained purely due to poor workman ship.

6. There is level formation problem on epoxy& spreading flooring.

Recommendation: contact with the consultant to modify work with skilled man
power, use quality materials, keep the materials in a dry safe and comfortable place
or store and so on.
