THE OVERALL INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE
ENTERY
The first challenge of this internship was to find a good hosting company where to spend From
may – June the internship period, and it wasn’t a simple task to find an actively involving
construction company in the country which is willing to host intern students in one of its sites.
However, finally I found this company named unity construction to getting accepted and being
approved to spend my internship period in one of their sites in Gondar university GCMHS
campus. Which the name of the project is Cancer treatment center.
Work pieces or tasks that we have been executing during our internship period were
divided in to two parts. These are:
Site work
Office work
The company performs some works like, form work, hollow block masonry work,
plastering work, cement screed & epoxy floor finish work, aluminum works and
gypsum work executed by sub-contractors.
The payment is issued for form work, HCB masonry wall, cement screed & epoxy
floor finish work, Aluminum work and plastering work are per m2.
Scaffolding and some other works are done by the monthly and daily employee

subsequent construction and for the purpose of payment to the contractor and
sub- contractors
The application of mortar to surfaces to be plastered is made using trowel and
wood float, and all plastering should be leveled. There are three types of coats
:
I. First coat (primary coat) ‘berera grief’.
Mix proportion, 1:3 (cement: sand by volume)
Spread by trowel and allowed to cure for 24 hours before applying second
coat.
Has minimum thickness of 5 mm.
II. Second coat ‘mullet or lessen:
Mix proportion, 1:3 (cement: sand by volume)
Has maximum thickness of 17mm.
Dried for 21days, before third coat applied.

III. Third coat (gypsum coat)
Mix proportion, (mix the gypsum powder and water sometimes
they have added some milk in the paste in order to retailed long
time)
Has maximum thickness of 3mm.
Should be finished truly and level, fine sand used for smooth
finish as final coat.
NB—fine cote (third cote) are to be applicable when the wall
finish is to be finish by paint. In our project the fine cote is
omitted because of the gypsum finish of the wall .in this case
the wall is not smooth.

Screed is a thin layer material that is placed on the top of the
concrete sub floor. There are three different types of screed
bonded , un bonded and floating. In my company screed made of
cement, sand and crushed stone aggregate/gravel and used the
method of bonded screed. Which means that the screed laid
directly in to the concrete surface .The layer of screed is covered
with decorative finish .

CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS
The company has some draw backs which I have noticed during our stay and hope
to see these recommendations incorporated into their system on their future projects.
Practicing the usual trends only and lack of motivation towards new
approaches
Negligence on employing assistance data collector for reliable data
collection on site activities
Rushing on some tasks without being pre-notified which affects the
reliability and accuracy of the respective work task
Negligence on construction safety rules and lack of safety tools
Problems and Recommendation
1. Blisteringof plastered surface: This is the formation of small patches of plaster
swelling out beyond the plastered surface, arising out of late slaking of lime particles in
the plaster.
2. Cracking: Cracking consists of formation of cracks or fissures in the plaster work result
in from the following reasons.
i. Imperfect preparation of background
ii. Structural defects in building
iii. Discontinuity of surface
iv. Movements in the background due to its thermal expansion or rapid drying
v. Movements in the plaster surface itself, either due to expansion or shrinkage.
vi. Excessive shrinkage due to application of thick coat
vii. Faulty workmanship.
4. Flaking: It is the formation of very loose mass of plastered surface, due to poor bond
between successive coats.
Recommendation: contact with the consultant to modify work with skilled man
power, use quality materials, keep the materials in a dry safe and comfortable place
or store and so on.
