• Geothermal energy takes advantage of Earth’s internal thermal energy
• Form of energy that comes from Earth’s internal heat and is considered
sustainable and renewable
• Volcanoes are great source of Earth’s internal heat that could be used to
convert water into steam the steam is used to power the turbine that is

• The country is the world’s second largest producer of geothermal energy
• The province is literally a powerhouse when it comes to energy. That is because it
has vast geothermal fields that are being tapped to produce electricity. The
Philippine National Oil Company-Energy Development Corporation (PNOC-EDC)
harnesses the underground pressurized steam and supplies it to the power plants of
the National Power Corporation (NPC).
• The province’s geothermal power plants supply about 30 percent of the total power
consumed in the Cebu-Panay-Negros power grid.

 HOW IS GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
OBTAIN?
• It is obtained from wells drilled into Earth’s surface
• Hot water evaporates from those wells in the form of steam the vapor makes the turbine
rotate and do mechanical work on the generator
• The generator converts mechanical energy from the rotating turbine to electricity
• A cooling tower condenses water vapor to water under low temperature
• Cold water is then sent back to the reservoir. It is heated again, and the cycle starts again
