Restroom Cleaning Procedures

Restrooms can make or break
the guest perception of a
restaurant, hotel or any other
facility.
Our Guests deserve and expect a clean, germ-free
and ador-free restroom.

Are you up to the challenge of providing the above?

Do you know the proper procedures for cleaning


these restrooms?
However, the principle is simple:
- Remove all dirty items
- Use proper chemicals
- Follow cleaning procedures
- Replenish and restock supplies
- Update Restroom Cleaning Record (Service Log)
- Report maintenance deficiencies

20 Steps to clean a restroom


Toilet brush- immersed in
disinfectant Glass cleaner
White pad
Air freshener

Yellow microfiber
cloth – for dry use
Blue microfiber cloth

Step 1

Knock the door of the


restroom and announce
“Housekeeping”.
Step 1

…also check that all


stalls are empty before
commencing
Wear the proper PPE or Personal Protective
Equipment.

In this case, it is disposable gloves or latex gloves.


Step 2

Place the “closed for


cleaning” sign on the
main entrance door
frame.
Step 3
Empty all receptacles.
This will include
empty the transhcan by
the door and all other
transhcans.
Step 4
Flush all the toilets by
pushing the flusher
button. For the urinal
bowls by holding hand
or palm in front of the
sensor.
Step 5
Squirt Toilet & Urinal
Bowl Cleaner under
the rim of each toilet
bowl and urinal bown.

(make sure that the bottle does not


touch the actual toilet fixture)
Step 6

Wipe and clean all


door handles, inside
and out using a clean
and unused pink
microfiber cloth and
disinfectant.
Step 7
Apply disinfectant in
the following areas
using the same
microfiber cloth :
 Sink faucets
 Soap dispenser

… wash basins…

… Counter tops…
Step 7

… Outside of toilet
bowls, toilet seats,
flusher buttons…

… Outside of toilet
urinal bowls, and
urinal partitions…
Ensure proper dwell time.

Clening mirrors using


glass cleaner and a
blue microfiber cloth.

…use a dry yellow


microfiber cloth for
polishing.
Step 9

Scrub all surfaces,


where disinfectant was
applied with a hand
brush or white cleaning
pad.
Step 10

Scrub the inside of


toilet bowl with the
toilet brush…

…and urinal with toilet


brush.
Step 11

Rinse off counter top


with clean water.
Step 12

Wipe all other surfaces


with completely wrung
out pink microfiber
cloth and allow to air
dry.
Step 13

Polish all stainless


steel fixtures and
surfaces with a dry
yellow microfiber
cloth.
Step 14
This step is to address
drain odors.
Check floor drains.
Pour water into the
drain trap if water is
below the trap level.
Step 15

Spray air freshener


inside each toilet
cubical and in the
restroom lobby area.
Before this step, discard gloves and wash hands
thoroughly.

Step 16
Replenish supplies
(washcloths, facial tissue,
toilet tissue, liquid hand
soap, sanitary bags,
urinal screens).
Washcloths must be
topped up at every visit
but not over load.
Step 17

Vacuum and spot-clean


the carpet, if required.
Step 18

Update and sign the


restroom cleaning
record.
Step 19
Check for any
maintenance issues and
immediately report any
problems to the
Assistant Housekeeper.
Place “out of servive”
sign wherenecessary.

When exiting the


restroom, ensure the
designated restroom
door barrier trashcan is
in its proper position.
Many restrooms have this unit installed on the
wall, as in this picture however…..

…some restrooms may
not have this unit.
In this case, place the
transhcan within 2 feet
from the main door on
the inside of the
restroom.
After all above is all completed,
spray some air freshener onto a
paper towel or unused pink
microfiber cloth.
Apply to all the countertops and
the front and back panel of the
main entrance door.
Other items to note….
Know the hot spots

Hot spots are the floor areas around the urinals and the toilets.
Other germ-prone hot spots incluse sink, soap dispenser contact point and
toilet bowl seats.

- Those are should aal be cleaned routinely-thoroughly-at each visit- with a


disinfectant.
- Proper checimal application and dwell time are important for it to be
effective.
During peak hours or hight traffic hours:

- Don’t block the restroom with the “closed for cleaning” sign or cleaning equipment.
- However, the attendant must enter to ensure the restroom is presentable.
- This means picking up any debris and dropping it into the restroom transh receptacle.
- Flushing all toilets and urinals.
- Wiping counter tops.
- Wiping spills under the urinals and toilet bowls with disposable paper towels or
damage cloth.
- Aoolying the disinfectant to countertops.
Check the moisture level of the
flowers in the restroom and add
water, as required.
Fold the toilet paper and
Kleenex into a pointed tip each
time you service a restroom.
The floors are to be scrubbed at
least once a day, however, mop
the floor with a clean mop as
often as required.

The urinal screen wordings must
be facing the right side.
If the urinal auto flush doest not
thoroughly rince the
screen/block, pour water water
over the top of the screen/block.
 The floor under the urinal
bowl should be scrubbed
once a day with a hard brush
after allowing sufficient
chemical dwell time.
 This will inhibit the build up
of urine salts on the floor.

 Dust the ceiling especially
around the vents at least once
a day.
 Dust the doors and frames at
least once a day.
 When see the towels like in
this picture always level the
towels to the same height.
 Uneven height of the towels
indicates the restroom is not
attended fot long time.
Thoroughly clean all receptacles
(waste, washcloths, and
sanitary) once a day.
At the end of your shift, top-up
the liquid hand soap dispensers
untul they are full.
Re-stock all restroom storage
closets with supplies for the
next day.
Clean sink drains and sink
overflow drain at least once a
day.
To sum up:
- If assigned to clean the restroom you play a very important role in the cleanliness
of the hotel or ship.
- The sequence is simple:
1. Remove all dirty items
2. Clean using proper chemicals and procedures
3. Replenish or restock the amenities
4. Fill log and report maintenance
- Know the hot spots.
- At peak hours you need to do quick fix without getting in the way of the guest.
