Conventional farming
Conventional farming refers to farming systems which include
the use of synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides to
maximize the yield of a particular crop which are typically
genetically modified. Conventional method is typically highly
resource and energy intensive, but also highly productive.
Conventional farming is usually contrasted to organic farming.

Conventional farming
Conventional farming relies on chemical intervention to fight
pests and weeds and provide plant nutrition. This method
requires a significant amount of chemical and energy input and
weakens the ecology of a landscape. Conventional agriculture
causes increased greenhouse emissions, soil erosion, water
pollution and threatens human health.

erosion, water pollution and threatens human health.
Checking the Summary
• After you have written the summary, ask yourself the checking
questions:
1. Is that what this paragraph is mostly about?
2. Can I make my summary more complete?
Organic Farming
Organic farming is a method that involves cultivation of plants
and rearing animals in natural ways. This process involves the use
of biological materials, avoiding synthetic substances to maintain
soil fertility and ecological balance thereby minimizing pollution
and wastage. Organic farming involves growing and nurturing
crops without the use of synthetic based fertilizers and pesticides.
Also, no genetically modified organisms are permitted.

system that strives for sustainability, the enhancement of soil fertility and
biological diversity. Organic farming yields such benefits as preservation
of soil’s organic composition. Organic agriculture reduces non-renewable
energy use by decreasing agrochemical needs. Organic farming contributes
to mitigating the greenhouse effect and global warming through its ability
to sequester carbon in the soil.
