Unlocking Key Terms
1. Current- amount of electron flowing through a conductor at a given
time.
2. Voltage- electromotive force which drives the electrons through the
circuit.
3. Resistance- measure of a material’s ability to slow down current flow.
4. Generator- a device which converts mechanical energy into electrical
energy.
5. Transformer- a device that transfer electrical energy fromone circuit
toanother either increasing or lowering the voltage.

Journey of
Electricity
with Mr. Electron
First thing’s
first…
Electricity
is a form of energy caused by the flow of
electrons in a circuit. When electrons move from
one atom to another, electric energy is created.
Before you can use electricity to power your
home, it is first generated in facilities called
POWER PLANTS.

In power plants, different energy sources are used to spin

the turbines and convert mechanical energy to electrical
energy using generators.
Nuclear Power Plant
Bataan Nuclear Power Plant
Geothermal Power Plant
Tiwi Geothermal Power Plant
Coal-fired Power Plant
Quezon Coal-fired Power Plant
Hydroelectric Power Plant
Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant
REMEMBER
Whichever type of power plant is used, it follows
practically the same concept. Electricity is
generated by converting the mechanical energy of
spinning turbines into electrical energy with the
help of generators.

From 12kV, electrical

voltage is raised to
400kV
High voltage electricity is then transmitted through
transmission lines which transmits high voltage
electricity over long distances.
From the transmission lines, the high voltage electricity is
brought to step-down substations. Here, the voltage is
lowered down through step-down transformers.

From 400kV to
13kV

Step-down Substation
From 13kV to
Then, from the step-down
240V
substation, electricity will now go to
the distribution lines.

Another step-down transformer is

attached to a local power pole to
further reduce the voltage of
electricity.
Finally, electricity will now be
directed to every household like this.
It can now be safely used to supply
power to your entire home.
I want to know how 3. What habits or
will you respond… practices do you want to
change in order to save
electricity?

ASSIGNMENT
(to be posted in MS Teams)

1. Research how electrical energy consumption is

computed and answer the given problem:

a. All the PCs in the computer shop are in use for

8 hours every day and together, all the PCs use
10.2 kW. How much energy is used by all the
PCs in a day?

2. Read in advance on plate tectonics.
