MOLE CONCEPT

Molecular mass
Mass of a substance is the sum of total atomic masses of all atoms in a molecule of that substance it is therefore relative molecule expressed in atomic mass unit (u)
• Calculate the relative molecular mass Of
1. copper sulphate (CuSO4)
2. Calcium hydrogen carbonate (Ca(HCO3)2)
Solution:-
Atomic mass of copper – 64u
Atomic mass of sulphur – 32u
Atomic mass of oxygen – 16u
Molecular mass of copper sulphate (CuSO4)= 64+32+16×4
=64+32+64 = 160u
Atomic mass of calcium – 40u
Atomic mass of hydrogen – 1u
Atomic mass of carbon – 12u
Atomic mass of oxygen – 16u
Molecular mass of calcium hydrogen carbonate (Ca(HCO3)2)
=40+(1+12+16×3)2
=40+(1+12+48)2
=40+(61)2
=40+122
=162u
MOLAR MASS
Molar mass is the gram atomic/molecular mass of a substance

It is the mass of a particle in unit gram

Calculate molar mass of

1. Sulphur molecule

2. Oxygen atom

3. Nitrogen molecule

4. Copper sulphate

5. H2O

Solution

Atomic mass of Sulphur = 32u

Molecular mass of Sulphur (S8) = 32×8=256u

Molar mass = gram molecular mass of substance = 256 gram

Atomic mass of oxygen = 16u

Molar mass = gram atomic mass of substance = 16g

Atomic mass of nitrogen = 14u

Molecular mass of nitrogen (N2) = 14×2=28u

Molar mass = gram molecular mass = 28 gram

Molecular mass of copper sulphate = 160u

Molar mass = gram molecular mass = 160g

Molecular mass of H2O = 18u

Molar mass = gram molecular mass = 18 g

MOLE
Nole is the amount of substance of a system that contains 6.022 ×10^23 atoms/molecule of that specific substance
Mass of 1 mole = gram atomic/molecular mass of that substance
1mole = avogadro number of atoms of that substance
Calculate the mass of
1.2 mole of nitrogen atom
2.5 mole of helium atom
Solution
Mass of 1 mole of nitrogen atom = 14g
Mass of 2 mole of nitrogen atom = 14×2=28g
Mass of 1 mole of helium atom = 4g
Mass of 5 mole of helium atom = 4×5=20g
Formula to calculate number of moles in substances
No. Of moles = given mass /molar mass
No. Of moles = given no. Of particles /avogadro no. Of particles
Total mass = given no. Of particles ×molar mass/avogadro no. of particles
Total no. of particles = given mass × avogadro no. of particles/molar mass
Calculate the mass of
3. 12.044×10^23 number of helium atoms
4. 3.011×10^23 number of nitrogen atoms
5. 6.022×10^23 number of oxygen atoms
Solution

1. Total mass = total number of particles× molar mass/avogadro number particles

Total mass = 12.044×10^23×4/6.022×10^23

=2×4=8gram

2. Total mass = 3.011×10^23×14/6.022×10^23

Total mass = 1×14/2

=14/2=7g

3. Total mass = 6.022×10^23×16/6.022×10^23

Total mass = 1×16/1

= 16g

Calculate the number of particles in

1. 52 gram of helium atoms

2. 8 gram of oxygen atom

3. 28 gram of nitrogen atom

Solution

4. Total no. of particles = Given mass × avogadro number of particles/ molar mass

Total no. of particles = 52×6.022×10^23/4

Total no. of particles = 13×6.022×10^23

= 78.286×10^23
2. Total no. of particles= 8×6.022×10^23/16
Total no. of particles = 6.022×10^23/2
=3.011×10^23
3. Total no. of particles = 28×6.022×10^23/14
Total no. of particles = 2×6.022×10^23
= 12.044×10^23
