LITERARY COMPOSITIONS
What is Literary
Compositions?
Literary composition refers to any piece of
written material. Literary composers and
creative writers often write for business,
academic and artistic outlets.
Why is literary composition
important?
The literary purpose is used to entertain and to give aesthetic pleasure.
The focus of the literary purpose is on the words themselves and on a
conscious and deliberate arrangement of the words to produce a pleasing
or enriching effect. A writer often expresses a worldview when using the
literary purpose.
Arte y Reglas de la Lengua Tagala (Art and Rules of the
Tagalog Language)
Written by Francisco Blancas de San Jose, translated to Tagalog by
Tomas Pinpin in 1610.

Many grammar books and dictionaries were published in the early


Spanish colonial period, but none was more influential than Francisco
Blancas de San Jose. First published in 1610, it was reprinted in a second
edition in 1752 and a third edition in 1832. Even today, it is regarded as
the most comprehensive codification of the Tagalog language.

Arte y Reglas de la Lengua Tagala is written in Latin, Spanish, and


Tagalog and its material is rice paper. The book is organized into
chapters on number, nouns, adjectives, voice, verbs, and so on. Verbs are
classified into the tenses present, future, accusative, ablative, imperative,
etc.

Grammar books and dictionaries were instrumental in spreading the word of God
and conversion of the natives. San Jose begins with an extensive “prayer with
which to ask our Lord God for help in order to obtain the language necessary for
the dignified preaching of his doctrine.” He continues, “Give me, Lord, energy
and enthusiasm so that without impatience I may learn the language of which the
souls of those around me are in need. I ask of you a fiery language to embrace my
breast, that your listeners may be inflamed by your love: and so that they and I
may love you: and in loving, deserve you in this life and I the other where we will
reach and see you. Amen.”

Ang "Compendio del Arte de la Lengua Tagala" o "Pag-Intindi sa


Wikang Filipino" was written by Gaspar de San Agustin in 1703.

It is the earliest Tagalog dictionary to have survived. It is a remarkably


full compilation of Tagalog language and culture at the time of the
Spanish conquest. The dictionary provides descriptions of Tagalog
material culture and notions, even those thought to be of satanic origin
and an impediment to Christianization, drawn from a first-hand
experience of many years lived isolated among the natives.

To sum up, this grammar was very didactic, and so


complete and easy to use that any missionary who wanted
to learn Ilokano had to study it and could do it quickly
because of its graphics and translations.

What is folk songs?
a song originating among the people of a country or
area, passed by oral tradition from one singer or
generation to the next, often existing in several versions,
and marked generally by simple, modal melody and
stanzaic, narrative verse.

Folk songs truly manifest the artistic
feelings of the Filipinos. They show
the Filipinos’ innate appreciation and
for love of beauty

the Philippines. Each region had its

Why are folk songs
important?
Folk songs are important to music because they give a short
history of the people involved in the music. Folk songs often
pass important information from generation to generation as
well. Folk songs tell stories of life forgotten or on the verge of

Leron Leron Sinta is a classic work song that is
believed to have originated in the Tagalog region
A. Leron-leron and was traditionally sang during the papaya
harvest season. It has a call and response verse
sinta pattern and is typically sung in duet by a man and a
woman, with some minor alteration in the lyrics.

Pamulinawen is a popular old Ilocano
folk song possibly from the pre-Spanish
era. It is about a girl with a hardened

The song depicts the story of a woman and
her lover named Dandansoy. It was
originated in the central region of the
Philippines. It is sung in the Hiligaynon

Sarung banggi, literally meaning "one
night" in the bikol language, the song tells
of an enchanted evening encounter between
a love struck man and a lovely rural lass.
