COMPUTER
A BRIEF
HISTORY OF COMPUTERS
COMPUTER
• Derived from the Latin word “computare”
which means “to calculate”, “to count”,
“to sum up”, or “to think together”.
• An electronic device that stores and
manipulates information.
• A device that performs computation.

CHARLES BABBAGE
•The father of Computer.
•Designed the Analytical Engine
and that the basic framework of
the computers today are based
on.

Computer can be classified into 3
generations:

•First Generation: 1937 – 1946

•Second Generation: 1947 – 1962

•Third Generation: 1963 – 1980

FIRST GENERATION: 1937-1946
• Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC)
The first electronic digital computer was
built by Dr. John V. Atanasoff and Clifford
Berry in 1937.
• Colossus
Is an electronic computer built for military
in 1943.

FIRST GENERATION: 1937-1946
• Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer (ENIAC)
The first general-purpose computer was built in 1946.
Weighed 30 tons.
Had 18,000 vacuum tubes which was used for processing.
Could only perform single task.

SECOND GENERATION: 1947 - 1962
• Transistors
Replaced the Vacuum Tubes because they
were more reliable and much faster.

• Universal Automatic Computer (UNIVAC)

The first computer for commercial use was
introduced to the public in 1951.

SECOND GENERATION: 1947 - 1962
• International Business Machine (IBM)
IBM 650 and 700 series computers made their mark on the
Computer world in 1953.

• During this generation, the computers had Memory and

Operating Systems (OS).
• Storage media such as Tape and Disk were used.
• Users used printers for output.

Third Generation: 1963 - 1980
• Jack Kilby
Invented the Integrated Circuit.

• Integrated Circuit (IC)

Replaced Transistors because they were much faster.

With this invention, computers became smaller, more

powerful, more reliable, and they are able to run many
different programs at the same time.

Fourth Generation 1981 - Present
• Microprocessors were used to build Computers.
• Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS)
Was born in 1980.
• Personal Computer (PC)
Was introduced by IBM in 1981 for home and office use.
Windows Operating Systems was introduced in 1990.
