Empathy is also the capacity to understand or
feel what another person is experiencing from
within their frame of reference, that is, the
capacity to place oneself in another's position.
CATEGORIES OF EMPATHY
We have three (3) categories of empathy namely;
1. Cognitive Empathy: Refers to our ability to identify and understand other people’s
emotions.

2. Affective Empathy: Affective empathy involves the ability to understand another


person's emotions and respond appropriately. Such emotional understanding may
lead to someone feeling concerned for another person's well-being.

3. Compassionate Empathy: Compassionate empathy is the ability to understand


and share in someone else’s emotions and taking necessary action.
