Separating

Mixture
through
Decantation
SCIENCE 6 – Q1 Week 4 (Lesson 6)
What’s New
The study of the mixture does not end with
mixing. We should also know how to
separate them. Depending on the type of
mixture, the individual substances in a
mixture can be separated by using different
methods and one of them is
decantation.
Problem
How does decantation use to
separate the mixture?
Materials
2 glasses of water (half-filled),
cooking oil, barbeque stick,
flour
Procedures
1.) Prepare the materials needed.
2.) Put 1 tablespoon flour into the glass of water then stir it.
3.) When you have stirred it for about 10 seconds leave the glass
and do not touch it for about 15 minutes.
4.) On the other glass, put 2 tablespoons oil then stir it. Let it stand
for 5 minutes. Observe what happen.
5.) Pour off the topmost liquid in another container. Use a barbeque
stick in transferring the liquid.
6.) Follow the illustration shown.
Questions
1. What kind of mixture do you have?

2. What are the different components of

your mixture?
3. How did you separate the components
of the mixture?
Questions
4. What tool did you use to separate the
mixture?

5. Describe the process.

Decantation
Decantation is a technique used in
separating the components of a
mixture by pouring the liquid
component from one container to
another without disturbing the
lower layer in a mixture
(Padpad et.al, 2017).
Once the mixture components are separated by forming
layers between them in a container the less dense substance
could be removed by scooping using a spoon or a sponge as
shown figure 1 or it can be removed slowly by pouring out
the less dense substance as shown in figure 2.
This process can also be used to
separate two liquids that do not mix
with each other for example oil and
water mixture as well as water and
flour mixture just like what we did in
activity 1. When we leave the mixture
of oil and water, two separate layers
are formed, with water at the bottom
and oil, being lighter, at the top. We
can remove the oil layer from the top
by pouring it into another vessel,
which leaves us with the water layer at
the bottom.
The same is true with a mixture of flour and water. When we
leave the mixture undisturbed for 15 minutes, the flour
particles settle at the bottom of the container making the
water clearer. We can separate the mixture by pouring the
water in another container leaving the flour particles on the
other one.
Other examples of
mixture that can be
separated through
decantation
Gasoline and water
Decanting a
mixture containing
flammable solvents can be
dangerous, as the
flammable material
evaporates and forms
dangerous fumes.
Mud and water
Muddy water can be
cleared up by decantation.
The mud
will sink to the bottom of
the tube, allowing the clear
water to be poured off.
Wine
Sediment from the
fermentation process can
produce an undesirable
taste. Wine is decanted to
separate the wine from
these sediments.
Cream and milk
Cream is separated
from milk by
decantation. Cream rises
to the top of the milk
mixture and is
easily removed.
Decantation has its
beneficial effects
and practical use
in our everyday
lives.
Through decantation,
we can remove dirt or
chemicals form a
mixture, gold from
sand, mud, and gravel
are collected as well.
It also helps in
removing the oil
spill is from the
sea water.
In addition to
that, it helps to
refine the taste
of the wine.
Moreover, it is
also the best
technique to
collect fish
sauce and
vinegar.
What’s More
Put a ( ✔ ) if the technique used to
separate the mixture is decantation,
( ❌ ) if not. Write your answers on
a sheet of paper.

2. gasoline and
✔water
3. salt from water

4. sand and gravel

5. mud and water

Assessment
Draw a thumbs up (👍🏻) if you will use
decantation to the following mixture
and a thumbs down (👎🏻) if not. Write
your answers on a separate sheet of
