01 Angle stability
Angle stability
• Sustained generator torque angles of less than 90 degrees(Typically less than 20)
• Sustained power angles of less than 90 degrees. Typically the power angles between con-
nected buses are less than 10 degrees
2
01 Voltage Stability
5.1
Voltage collapse occurs when there is not enough Mvar available to serve the reactive
power requirements of the area power system and loads.
Excessive loading in the power system leads to deficiencies in Mvar and the system is
no longer able to support voltage. > Voltage collapse
Angle stability :

01 Voltage Stability
Long term voltage instability
Radial power system: parallel lines are used to connect generation
sources to the load
P-V Curve
MW transfer increases, voltage at the receiving bus slowly decreases
MW transfer leads to a rapid decrease in voltage (Knee point)
(Knee point)
(Figure 6-7)

01 Voltage Stability
Long term voltage instability
Using shunt capacitors to solve system voltage problems and to increase MW transfer
capabilities

01 Voltage Stability
Long term voltage instability
Conditions for Long Term Voltage Instability
Active and reactive power flows on the system to be heavy (B
Long term voltage instability Process
7
01 Voltage Stability
Long term voltage instability
Role of tap change equipment
Voltage overshoot yields MW and Mvar load overshoot

01 Voltage Stability
Classical voltage instability
Simulation of Classical voltage instability
9
01 Voltage Stability
Classical voltage instability

01 Voltage Stability
Classical voltage instability
V-Q curve
• C : Point of voltage instability
• D : 100Mvar shunt capacitor 추 가 시 230KV 로 전 압
상승

01 Voltage Stability
Classical voltage instability
P-V & V-Q Curve
the maximum MW transfer before voltage instability is 1,500 MW.
12
01 Voltage Stability
Short-term voltage instability
Induction motor stalling
• When a large induction motor is started, it may draws 5 – 8 times its normal Mvar to build
its magnetic field
Loss of Synchronism
• Angle < 90 degrees : stable
• Angle > 90 degrees : Mid-point voltage drops
• Angle = 180 degrees : Mid-point voltage is 0 – 전압 붕괴 발생
13
01 Voltage Stability
Preventing voltage instability
Use dynamic reactive reserves(Carried in synchronous machine or SVC)
• automatically controlled reactive reserves that respond rapidly to voltage deviations
• Difficult to transmit reactive power so the location of the dynamic reactive reserves is important
Load shedding
• Not enough reactive reserves > To shed load
• If the voltage instability develops slowly, manual load shedding may be an option.
• 일반적인 UVLS 세팅
• 5% of load is tripped if voltage falls below 92% of nominal for a minimum of 5 seconds.
• An additional 5% of load is tripped if voltage falls below 92% of nominal for a minimum of 8 seconds.
• An additional 5% of load is tripped if voltage falls below 90% of nominal for a minimum of 3.5 seconds.
