Preamble

NLCIL has followed Clean & Green Mining practices for the past 65 years which has
created a sustainable green environment. The enviro-friendly sustainable development
is achieved as a result of habitual activity of NLC India Limited since inception.

NLCIL is practicing the Environmental management system to monitor the EC/FC

conditions periodically in all industrial units of NLCIL by conducting monthly Unit
Environment Cell meeting by Corporate Environment Cell division for so many years.
As a result, all the Environmental norms are compiled as per the MoEF& CC.
1. Environmental Monitoring System
Air Quality Management
 Environmental External Monitoring system
Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) conducts periodical surveys to
monitor the Ambient Air Quality (AAQ) in the mining units. The results of the
TNPCB for Neyveli Mines and NABL accredited labs for outside projects are
well within the permissible limits.
 Internal Environmental Monitoring system
NLCIL installed 13 AAQ stations and 1 CAAQM Station in Neyveli, Tamilnadu
in approval with TNPCB for monitoring the Air Quality Parameters, out of 13
AAQ stations, 10 AAQ stations in the surrounding villages are monitored by
the renowned institute, IIT-Madras & 3 station are monitored by an in-
house lab (Centre for Applied Research & Development) accredited with NABL.
The results are within the permissible limits and submitted to Statutory officials
too. No Non Compliances have been reported so far.

 The dust generated in the mines are controlled by water spraying using sprinklers, Spray guns etc., on the
roads and planting of dense green belts roadsides and around the mines.

1. Environmental Monitoring System
Water Quality Management
 NLCIL has taken lot of efforts in water management by utilizing the waste water generated in the mines
and power stations for definite use. The storm water from the mines is treated and supplied to the
township for domestic usage and for the thermal power stations for industrial usage there by conserving
the precious ground water for advantageous use.

 The effluent generated from the mines in the areas of canteen, service yards are treated and sent to the
nearby area for agricultural activities.

 NLCIL has taken several measures towards rain water harvesting and recharge of ground water which
includes construction of check dams, percolation wells, observation wells, Piezometric wells and recharge
wells. These efforts have positive effect on the improvement of the ground water status in the nearby
areas.

 SPCB officials collect effluent and water samples from the mining units on a monthly basis for testing in
their Advanced Environmental Lab (AEL). The results of the effluent samples are well within the
permissible limits.

1. Environmental Monitoring System
Noise Management

Periodical noise level survey in all the industrial units by NLCIL & SPCB is being
conducted in all the industrial units of NLCIL.

The test results show that the noise levels are well with in the prescribed norms.

Also the personals working in high noise level areas are provided with personal
protective equipment such as ear plug.
1. Environmental Monitoring System
Land Management in Mines

 Reclamation of mined out area within the shortest duration using Integrated Farming system (IFS).

 The high overburden dumps were creating soil erosion and water pollution problems and NLCIL has
taken efforts to stabilize the overburden dumps (slope stabilization) by afforestation which has improved
the soil binding capacity and prevents soil erosion

 So far, a total area of about more than 2000 ha. of land is reclaimed for afforestation, agricultural,
horticulture crops in all the NLCIL mines.

Green Zone Development
Even before the advent of Environmental Laws & Regulations implemented in our country, NLCIL had given
prime importance to Environmental Protection through various eco-friendly activities including green belt
development
So far, NLCIL has raised about 23 lakhs trees in the region over a period of 6 decades in and around Neyveli
Township and production units.

2. Statutory Reports
Environment Statement
Annual filing in the form of Annual Environment Statement consisting of all the
Environmental related data pertaining to the Industrial Units of NLCIL is being
submitted to TNPCB, CPCB and MoEF&CC every year and is being accepted and
there is no violation.

EC/FC Compliance Reports

The EC/FC compliance reports of the units are being submitted to MoEF&CC on
timely basis as stipulated in the EC/FC conditions.

Hazardous Waste, E-Waste & Battery Waste

Annual Filing of Hazardous waste, E-Waste & Battery Waste are being submitted
every year.
3. HQ Level EC/FC Compliance Monitoring System
In order to streamline the issues pertaining to Environment clearance (EC) and
Forest Clearance (FC) and to develop a uniform structure and efficient
environment Management system, NLCIL has formed the Environmental
Monitoring Committees at Area level and at HQ level.

The monthly meetings convened by the Area level Committees to monitor the
compliance of EC/FC conditions are reviewed by the HQ level Committee every 3
months. The report of the HQ level Committee is being submitted to the MoC.

The Compliance statuses of EC/FC conditions and the Environment Monitoring

data are regularly updated in MDMS portal.
4.0 Consent To Operate (CTO)
All the units of NLCIL are operating with valid Consents from every year from
SPCB’s. This is issued after complete inspection of the mining units and verifying the
compliances norms of MoEF&CC. So far, no violations or non-compliances have
been received.

5.0 ISO 14000 Certification

All the industrial units have obtained ISO certificates, including ISO 14000 obtained
for sound Environment Management activities carried out by the Units.
6.0 Environmental Awareness
Observation of Environmental Days:
NLCIL as a part of creating awareness of maintaining Good & Clean Environmental
practices among the employees of NLCIL, School students and general public,
observes important environmental Days such as World Environment Day, World Earth
Day, World Biodiversity day, World ozone day, World Soil Day, World Water Day,
World Forest Day etc., and ensures the involvement of all the Units through the Unit
Environmental Cell members.

Vriksharopan Abhiyan:
In view of the only single solution to the Global Climate Crisis, Govt of India had
launched Tree Plantation Campaign (Vriksharopan Abhiyan) 2021 on 19th August 2021.

During the Vriksharopan Abhiyan event NLCIL had carried out mass tree plantation &
distribution events at all its Mines & industrial Units. On a single day 2.4 lakhs tree
plantations was carried out.
