I. INTRODUCTION TO THE LESSON

● Lesson Title
Equations with Homogenous Coefficients
● Lesson Overview
In the previous lesson, you were taught about the concepts of separation of variables and the properties associated with
logarithms and integration.
This lesson will teach you how to identify if the given differential equation is homogenous or non-homogenous. A step-by-
step solution to solve for the differential equation will also be discussed.

Equations with Homogenous Coefficients

II. LESSON PROPER

A. Test for Homogeneity
A differential equation in the form is called a homogenous differential equation of degree n when and ).
An equation is homogenous if it can be written in either of the forms or .

Steps on how to determine whether homogenous or non-homogenous:

1. Replace 𝑥 by 𝑡𝑥 and 𝑦 by 𝑡𝑦
2. Factor out 𝑡 with the least exponent from the expression
3. If the exponent of 𝑡 is the same as the sum of the exponents of and in the expression, then it is a
homogenous function.

II. LESSON PROPER
B. Homogenous Equations in the First Order
A differential equation is homogenous in 𝑥 and 𝑦 if 𝑀 and 𝑁 are homogenous functions of the
same degree in 𝑥 and 𝑦.

To solve for , we will use the substitution process that will lead to variables separable
differential equation.

IV. SUMMARY OF LESSONS
 A homogenous equation will have the same degree for each term.
 There are three (3) steps in identifying whether a DE is homogenous or non-homogenous.
 The solution for a homogenous equation will depend whether M is simpler than N or N is
simpler than M.
 Properties of logarithms and natural logarithms are still applicable to further simplify the
solution.
