Technology in the

Modern Age
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY,
AND SOCIETY
What is Modern-Day
Technology?
Modern day Technology
• Modern Technology is simply an advancement of
old technology.
• What we call ‘modern technology’ is technically
not so new in most cases.
THE Use of Technology
• We use technology on a daily basis to
accomplish specific tasks or interests.
• Modern technology or evolved technology at
times may replace previously used technology
due to its increased benefits or newfound
popularity.
For example:
• At some point in transportation technology, steam-powered
trains were widely used. Now, they have been replaced by
electric-powered trains which move significantly faster,
allowing for more efficient use of time and better use of
natural
resources.
Examples of
Modern Age
Technology
Compound
Microscope
• A Dutch spectacle maker named
Zacharias Jansen is credited for
the invention of the first
compound microscope.
Telescope
• This invention could magnify
objects 20 times larger than the
Dutch perspective glasses.
Jacquard Loom
• Built by French weaver Joseph Marie
Jacquard, the Jacquard loom, a
drawloom was used which required
two individuals to operate – the
‘weaver’ and a ‘drawboy’ – if figured
designs on textiles were needed.
Engine-Powered Airplane
Engine-Powered Airplane

• Wilbur and Orville Wright are

credited for designing and
successfully operating the first
engine-powered aircraft.
• Their pioneering success marked
an age of powered flights.
Television
• Scottish engineer John Logie Baird
is largely credited for the invention
of the modern television.
• Baird successfully televised objects
in outline in 1924, and moving
objects in 1926, and projected
coloured images in 1928.

Advantages of
Modern-Day
Technology
• EASY ACCESS TO INFORMATION
With smart gadgets like the iPad, iPhone,
Galaxy Series phones and the like, users can
easily have access to a vast amount of
information wherever they are through the use
of the internet on these devices.
• ENCOURAGES INNOVATION AND
CREATIVITY
Since technology seems infinite, it sparks the
brain to work its full potential.

this encourages creativity.
• IMPROVED COMMUNICATION
Modern technology has blessed us with
communication technology tools. This includes
e-mail, mobile phones, video conferencing,
instant text messaging applications, social
networking, and so on.
• EASE OF MOBILITY
Modern transportation technology makes it very
easy to travel long distances. Transport is very
important both in our lives and in the business
world.
• IMPROVED HOUSING AND LIFESTYLE
Another excellent way of how modern
technology has simplified our lives are improved
housing and lifestyles.
• CONVENIENCE IN EDUCATION

students to learn from anywhere through online
education and mobile education.
Disadvantages of
Modern-Day
Technology
• Increased Loneliness
Social isolation is on the increase. People are
spending more time playing video games,
learning how to use new modern technologies,
and so on.
• Job Loss
Modern technology has replaced many human
jobs; robots are doing the jobs which used to be
done by humans.
• World Destruction/Advanced Weapons
Modern technology has been the main aid in the
increasing of endless wars. It aids the manufacturing of
modern war weapons.
• Security
Advances in technology have aided security. However,
due to these advances, everything is connected to the
internet in some way.
Topic Summary
• To wrap up the topic, we have enumerated
and discussed some of the known
advantages and disadvantages of modern-
day technology, in which learning them can
help us in simple media and information
literacy.
