Separating
Mixtures
Review:
Identify the kind of mixtures.
Choose your answer between the choices
mentioned above.
State your answer in the space below.
HOMOGENEOUS or
HETEROGENEOUS

bread
HOMOGENEOUS or
HETEROGENEOUS

iced tea
SOLUTE or SOLVENT

sugar
SOLUTE or SOLVENT

water
SOLUTION or SUSPENSION

muddy water
SOLUTION or COLLOID

milk
Here are the different techniques of
separating mixtures:
• Filtering
• Sieving
• Evaporation
• Decantation
• Magnetism
Filtering- solid and liquid components can
be separated with the use of filter paper or
filter cloth as a medium in which liquid
passes through a filter paper leaving
insoluble solid material in the medium.
Filtering
These are some of the benefits of the
method filtering on our daily lives.
• Filtering drinking water
• Brewing coffee
Sieving – it is as a method in which two or
more components of different sizes are
separated from a mixture based on the
difference in their sizes which uses a sieve.
Sieving
These are some of the benefits of the use
of sieving on our daily lives.
• Draining of rice, noodles and other food
when cooked in hot water
• In construction, separate fine sand from
rock and pebbles

Evaporation is a process of separating
mixtures that involve heating the solution
until the solvent evaporates leaving behind
the solid residue.
Heat is the main component in this process
separating a solid’s mixtures from a liquid.
As liquid goes into the air in a form of gas
when heated, changing liquid to gas is an
example of physical change.
Evaporation
Some examples of evaporation.
• boiling water
• drying clothes
• drying wet roads after
heavy rains
TRY THESE!
Raise a thumbs up if the mixture can be
separated by evaporation and thumbs
down if NOT.
sugar and water
orange juice and ice
ground coffee and hot water
fabric and water
salt from seawater
Decantation is a process of separating
liquid components of a mixture while solid
component has settled at the bottom as
sediments, that is, transferring a liquid
from another container.
Decantation
Some examples of decantation.
• Wine and sediments
• Preparing rice for cooking
• Preparation of Vinegar
Metals which are made up alloy, nickel,
or cobalt are easily attracted to the
magnet, while non-metals are not. Iron
fillings, thumb tacks, staple wire, pins,
coins, and needle are some common
examples of objects that are attracted to
the magnet.
When they mixed with non-metals, these
could be separated by magnet.
Some examples of separating by
magnets.
• Removing iron bearing minerals
from silica sand used in the
production of glass;
• Separate metals from recycling bins
