OBJECTIVES

1. The need to provide school administrators and teachers


the much needed information to develop their skills in
sports management at the different levels of school
activities and school meets;
2. The desire to provide for the sound emotional, mental
and physical development of pupils/students through
classroom instruction as well as participating in
wholesome individuals, dual and team efforts activities;
3. The objective of promoting opportunities to
pupils/students and teachers-coaches to select activities
they wish to specialize in; and
4. The call to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship through
proper management of school sports program and actual
sports competition.
MECHANICS OF SPORTS MANAGEMENT

A. Administrative Leadership
Leadership is a process of influencing the activities of an
organized group towards goal setting and goal
achievement. It can either be direct or indirect. Direct
leadership involves immediate contact between the leader
and the member of the group. This is “seen” leadership.
The action of the individuals are greatly influenced by the
presence of the leader.
Four Elements of Leadership Situation:
1. The Leader – with his abilities, personality
traits, responsibilities and authorities.
2. The followers – with their abilities,
personalities and responsibilities.
3. The situation – with its special features.
4. The purpose or task – with, which the
individuals, program and the organization are
concerned.
Forms of Leadership:

Functions of an Administrator/Manager

Factors that may help or adversely affect the
program such as:
1. Relevance of the program to the people involve
2. Soundness of its objective
3. Moral and materials support
4. Availability of trained personnel
5. Availability of supplies and materials
6. Adequate logistical support
7. Prevailing weather conditions
8. Unforeseen events beyond human control
THREE TYPES OF MANAGEMENT
1. Conventional type of management is principally characterized
by the use of the hit-and-miss or the trial-and error method.

2. Systematic type of management is sometimes called historical


method. This is characterized by the system of management used by
old administration without considering the advantageous effects or
outputs.

3. Scientific type is a product of intelligent planning. This method


takes consideration the problem or project, nature of the situation,
selection of possible solutions, trying all of them and finally selecting
the most productive and effective one. This method relies on proven
strategies of management.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF OFFICIATING

1.Uniformity of interpretation
2.Close coordination between coaches and officials

5.Officials must rule on acts completed – not in
anticipation
6.Except in situations where specific jurisdiction is
given by the rules to one official. All officials
should make decisions on any play which they see
anywhere.

A. ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THE
DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMPETITIONS
1. SINGLE ELIMINATION
Advantages
1. The tournament can be finished within a short period of time
2. Less expensive and needs less equipment, facilities and officiating officials
3. It is interesting to watch which team will remain in the championship
4. Taking everything equal, the last game will be among the best competing teams

Disadvantages
1. The champion may not be the best team
2. It emphasizes elimination
3. There is not enough time to select the best players due to the few number of
games played
4. It is not commensurate to the time, effort and expenses
2. Double Elimination
A. Advantages
1. It permits each team to play at least two games
2. More games are involved and greater interest is engendered.
3. It is more interesting to watch or to wait for the surviving teams.
4. The last game will really decide the championship between two
best teams
5. There is enough time in selecting the best players as more games
are played by winning teams

B. Disadvantages
1. Not all teams play the same number of games.
2. Not all teams have a chance to play against each other.
3. It is hard to follow the schedule
4. A team’s next opponent will be known immediately after the first
pairing
ROUND ROBIN
ADVANTAGES
1. It produces the true champion.
2. All teams have a chance to play against each other
3. All teams play an equal number of games
4. It is easy to determine the best players.
5. It is easy to prepare the schedule and definitely know one’s
next opponent
6. It commensurates to the time, effort and expenses.

DISADVANTAGES
1. Needs more financing, facilities, equipment, supplies, etc.
2. It takes a longer time to finish the tournament
3. Some games are found to be dull and interesting
4. Some weak teams may default their games especially when
their opponent is strong
